Ways to Reduce the Spread of Flu and Other Germs
Fairfax County is seeing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. Visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings.
Consider these tips from the Fairfax County Health Department to help reduce the spread of flu and other germs.

End of 2nd Quarter and Schedule Change Requests
The 2nd quarter ends on Wednesday, January 28th. The window for teachers to submit 2nd quarter grades is January 22nd through February 4th. To ensure accurate reporting of quarter grades, a pause will be placed on schedule changes during the grading window. Completed schedule change packets received by 12:00 PM on Tuesday, January 20th will be reviewed and, if approved and pending space availability, processed prior to the grading window opening on January 22nd. Any schedule change requests received after 12:00 PM on January 20th that are approved will be processed on Thursday, February 5th or after.
At this time, all elective changes are complete; the only schedule changes being considered are for downward level changes (e.g., AP to Honors, or Honors to non-Honors). The final deadline to request a schedule change for the 2025-26 school year is Wednesday, February 11th.
Academy Open Houses
FCPS high school academies are holding open houses for interested students. Open houses are a great opportunity to visit classrooms and labs, and meet instructors and academy counselors.
An academy is a center within a high school that offers advanced technical and specialized courses to prepare students for postsecondary education and/or career fields. Academy elective courses provide students with various career experiences, including shadowing, mentoring, or internships with local businesses.
Students can explore more than a dozen career fields through FCPS academies! Watch this video to learn more about academy programs.
