Arlington Native Promoted to Chief DeputyArlington County Sheriff José Quiroz has announced the promotion of Juan Gelabert to Chief Deputy of the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office. Chief Deputy Gelabert brings more than two decades of dedicated service to the agency and a deep, lifelong connection to the Arlington community. Chief Deputy Gelabert joined the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office in January 2001 and began his career in detention facility operations. Over the course of his career, he has served in a wide range of operational, supervisory, and leadership roles, including Court Security, Warrants and Civil Process, Training Coordinator, Internal Affairs Commander, Assistant Director of Operations, and most recently Director of Corrections, where he oversaw all detention facility operations, staff management, and strategic planning. “Chief Deputy Gelabert has demonstrated steady leadership, integrity, and a deep commitment to both our staff and those in our custody throughout his career,” said Sheriff Quiroz. “His operational experience, institutional knowledge, and dedication to Arlington make him exceptionally well-suited for this role, and I am confident he will lead this agency forward.” Chief Deputy Gelabert attended Arlington County public schools and has spent his entire professional career serving the community where he was raised. He is engaged in professional and community leadership, including participation in Arlington County’s EMERGE program and graduation from Leadership Arlington. “Being raised in Arlington and having the opportunity to serve this community for more than 20 years has been an incredible honor,” said Chief Deputy Gelabert. “I am proud to step into this role and excited to continue working alongside the dedicated men and women of the Sheriff’s Office as we serve Arlington today and help shape its future.” Chief Deputy Gelabert successfully completed the Jail Executive Institute in 2025, a program hosted by the American Jail Association and University of Nebraska at Omaha’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. He maintains certifications in jail officer, court security, civil process, and law enforcement training. Chief Deputy Gelabert is a member of several professional organizations, including the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association, National Sheriffs’ Association, American Correctional Association. He has received multiple Meritorious Service Awards and Letters of Commendation in recognition of his service.
