PTA Movie Night: How to Train Your Dragon
This Friday, January 16, 6:30pm
Hunters Woods Gym
Please join us on Friday at 6:30pm for the next PTA movie night in the Hunters Woods gym.
We'll be showing How to Train Your Dragon.
Bring cozy blankets, pillows, and chairs. Snacks, drinks, and hot dogs will be available for sale.
We need several volunteers to help make movie night a success.

PTA Meeting
Wednesday, January 21
5:30pm mingle, 6pm meeting start
Join us at our next PTA meeting on January 21. We'll provide updates on current activities and will have a guest speaker, Tara Prohoniak, Math Resource Teacher.
Ms. Prohoniak will share information about the new universal screener in math called the MAP Growth Assessment. Details will include how families can understand their students’ results, how teachers use the data to drive instruction and make decisions within our Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) to provide necessary intervention.
Financial Literacy Workshop for Students
During the meeting, we'll also have a special financial literacy lesson for 1st-6th graders. See flyer directly below.

Save the Date for International Night
Wednesday, February 11
Get involved by:
- Signing up to host a table sharing artifacts, clothing, photos, crafts, or interesting facts from your cultural background.
- Performing in the showcase: share a talent (dance, music, martial arts) that showcases your cultural background.
- Are you a military or government family who has lived overseas? Take us on a tour of places you've visited or been stationed.
We're also looking for volunteers the day of the event for set up and clean up.

Our schedule for delivering the weekend food bags is open through the end of the school year. If you have 20 minutes free on Friday mornings before school, we could use your help.

PTA Nominating Committee Volunteers Needed
We need 3 volunteers to serve on our PTA nominating committee. This committee will guide the process to fill open PTA positions for teh 2026-2027 school year. As part of the nominating committee, you would:
- Attend the next 3-4 general PTA meetings
- Help identify nominees for open PTA board positions (we will have several open positions)
- Run nominations during PTA general meeting later this year
This commitment would be approximately 1-2 hours per month over the next few months.

STEM Clubs
Some Clubs Now Running, Enrollment Continues
Hunters Woods STEM clubs are open for registration! The cost to register is $50 per student. Some scholarships are available.
Some clubs have started, but continue to enroll if your student is interested.

Sign your student up for Lego League, MathCounts, Science Olympiad, and Odyssey of the Mind by sending an email with your student’s name and grade level to Carolina Young at stemvp@hwpta.org.

South Lakes High School Presents: Broadway Night
South Lakes High School Chorus is proud to present Broadway Night, an incredible showcase of talent and music! This year's theme, 'Broadway through the Books', features songs from beloved book-inspired musicals including Wicked, Les Misérables, Mary Poppins, Phantom of the Opera, Seussical, and many more, performed by 5th through 12th grade students from Forest Edge, Fox Mill, Hunters Woods, Lake Anne, Sunrise Valley, Terraset, Langston Hughes, Rachel Carson, and South Lakes. Don't miss this fabulous event of song and dance!

Caps Street Hockey
If you’ve ever wanted to feel the thrill of hockey without having to learn how to skate, the Capitals Street Hockey League (CSHL) is your perfect playground! Grab a stick, lace up your sneakers, and get ready for fast-paced games, awesome teammates, and a whole lot of outdoor fun. It’s hockey made simple, made accessible, and most importantly — made to be a blast for kids of all skill levels.
The Washington Capitals are dedicated to providing the community with legitimate avenues to playing all forms of hockey. The Capitals Street Hockey League will be located in multiple communities to complete the pathway for kids to participate in street hockey. Let's play!
Season: March 2026 to May 2026 Divisions: U6 (5-6 year-olds), U8 (7-8 year-olds), U12 (9-12 year-olds) Games: 8 weekends, 2 games per team per weekend, 16 total games per team per season Practices: Each division will have a one-hour group practice each week
Rink Locations:
- Lake Fairfax Park Rink (Reston, VA)
- Francis C. Hammond Rink (Alexandria, VA)
- Ridge Road Recreational Park Rink (Germantown, MD)
Gear:
- Purchase a stick in the registration page or bring your own!
- No other equipment required (shin guards, gloves, elbow pads, mouthguard all recommended but not required)
- Helmets are prohibited
