Healthy Habits to Reduce the Spread of Flu & Other Germs
Fairfax County and Willow Springs are seeing high levels of influenza (flu) illness. Visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings.
Consider these tips from the Fairfax County Health Department to help reduce the spread of flu and other germs.
-
Cover coughs and sneezes. Use tissues to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing or use your upper sleeve. Throw tissues away and wash hands after.
-
Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available (with supervision for younger children).
-
Consider wearing a mask around others indoors. If you must be around others while ill, wearing a mask can help reduce spread.
- Clean frequently touched surfaces.
-
Do not give aspirin to children. Anyone 18 years and younger who might have the flu should not be given aspirin or any products that contain salicylate (e.g. Pepto Bismol) as this can cause a rare and serious complication called Reye’s syndrome.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 19, for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. See the complete school year calendar.
GLOW Party
All students and families are invited to a Glow Party on Friday, January 23rd from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the WSES Gym. There will be a DJ, lots of dancing, limbo, glow games, face painting, pizza, and a dance off.
We'll have a blast together burning off some of our extra winter energy!
