Arlington’s Annual MLK Tribute Returns on January 18

Arlington will honor the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special tribute on Sunday, Jan. 18, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Wakefield High School. This year’s production, Dreams, Faith & Justice in Action will reflect on Dr. King’s enduring message through an inspiring blend of storytelling, music, and dance.

Performances Headlined by Howard Gospel Choir of Howard University

Arlington is proud to feature the renowned Howard Gospel Choir of Howard University to deliver powerful headline performances driven by their 50-year legacy. The Howard Gospel Choir serves as a trailblazer for gospel ministries across college campuses as a premiere performing arts ensemble that has graced the stage at the White House, the Kennedy Center, and in countries all over the world. Audiences will also delight in local and regional talents including lyrical dancer Jayme Howard, the Patterson Elementary School choir, and the Gunston Middle School step team.

Speakers and Recognitions

This year’s tribute will feature inspiring oration by guest speakers including attorney and activist Marcia Olivia Payne, Esq., pastor and author Dr. Shakina Dunbar Rawlings, and the Honorable Judge William T. Newman, Jr., who served as Arlington’s first African American County Board Member and Chair. The program will also spotlight local changemakers whose works embody Dr. King's principles in Arlington.

The 2026 MLK Tribute is led by Arlington County staff, in collaboration with the program’s planning committee represented by Cleveland James, Kim Roberts, Saundra Green, and Anne Smith. The tribute is also produced by Encore Stage & Studio under the direction of Madaline Y. Langston.

A Day On, Not a Day Off

The community is encouraged to drop off food donations at the event in support of the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). Interested participants can also explore other meaningful ways to serve weekend through Volunteer Arlington’s MLK Day of Service.
