Make a Difference on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy by giving back to your community. Explore Visit Fairfax's list of upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day service projects, including days of service and volunteer opportunities.

Friday, Jan. 16 Events

Hands-Only CPR Class (2 - 3 p.m.) Learn how to save a life at Oakton Library with an interactive hands-only CPR class from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue. This class will cover how to recognize cardiac arrest, steps to respond in an emergency situation and provide hands-on practice. No prior experience is needed.

Chair Yoga for Adults (2:30 - 3:30 p.m.)

Find stability, alignment and integrity through seated stretches and safe movement at Great Falls Library. Sessions are taught by a certified yoga instructor.

Read to the Dog (4:30 - 5:30 p.m.)

Read a story to a trained therapy dog at Burke Centre Library. Bring your own book or choose one from the library.

New Year with New Friends: Teen Night (6 - 8:30 p.m.)

Join us for an after-hours event for teens at Pohick Regional Library. Enjoy fun activities, movies, food and games. For teens in 7th-12th grade.

Saturday, Jan. 17 Events

Campfire Saturdays - Stargazing Enjoy a stroll along the lake shores, and learn about constellations and their stories. Telescopes will be available. The program will end with s'mores around the  campfire. Registration is $12. Burke Lake Park (5 - 6:30 p.m.) Lake Fairfax Park (5:30 - 7 p.m.)

Winter Bird Walk (8 - 9 a.m.)

Take a hike through the woods to listen and look for Riverbend Park’s winter avian residents and migrants. Find out what birds do to survive the winter weather. Feel free to bring your own guides, binoculars and spotting scopes. Registration is $8.

LEGO in the Library (10:30 - 11:30 a.m.)

Join other kids who love building as much as you at Great Falls Library. We'll provide the LEGOs and you provide the imagination. For children ages 4-18. 

Author Visit: Sylvia Reyes (11 - 11:30 a.m.)

Join local author Sylvia Sierra Reyes at the Lorton Library for a reading from her new book, "Let's Count to Five."  Children can enjoy coloring activities with the reading. 

Stories from Tudor Place: A Historic House and Garden (2 - 3 p.m.)

Explore the layered history of Tudor Place at John Marshall Library in Alexandria. Tudor Place is a historic property in Georgetown that preserves the stories of Martha Washington’s descendants and the enslaved individuals who lived and worked there. 

Workhouse Military Arts Initiative (2 - 3 p.m.)

Join us at Kings Park Library in Burke to learn about the Workhouse Military Arts Initiative. This program empowers the military community with expert-led classes, family workshops and open art studio sessions.

Skate and Dance Night: Sports Jersey Night (6 - 9 p.m.)

Enjoy skating, dancing and music at the Franconia Rec Center. Wear your favorite sports jersey, bring your own skates and be ready for a night of fun. Registration is $10.

Sunday, Jan. 18 Events

Winter Lecture - Fairy Gardens (1:30 - 2:30 p.m.) Step into the enchanting world of fairy gardens at Green Spring Gardens Park in Alexandria. Learn how to create your own fairy garden, from design themes and plant selection to sourcing figurines and natural materials. Get inspired and see how easy it is to add a touch of whimsy to your garden. Registration is $15.

Engineering Challenge: Marshmallow Bridges (1 - 2 p.m.)

Learn how engineers design bridges and then put your skills to the test at Centreville Regional Library. Using only toothpicks and marshmallows, work on building the strongest bridge you can. For children ages 10-13.

Pokémon Card Trade (2 - 3 p.m.)

Bring your Pokémon cards to meet, compete and trade with other collectors at Reston Regional Library. Enjoy trivia, prizes, coloring and more. For children ages 7-12.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events (Times Vary) Pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy with events throughout the county and Washington D.C. Events include a wreath laying service at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, walks, a wellness fair and more.

Dark Sky Education and Celebration Event Friday, Jan. 23, 6 - 8 p.m. Join us at Observatory Park at Turner Farm in Great Falls for a dark sky education and celebration event. There will be remarks from project partners, educational activities and opportunities to observe the night sky. Learn more.
