From cyclone to flood and major stock losses, the start of 2026 has been devastating for some.
Hundreds of millimetres of rain drenched parts of central and western Queensland, forcing residents of Clermont to seek higher ground as dry paddocks turned into inland oceans.
But as is the case for most emergencies, there's been some stories of miraculous survival.
Like truckie and horse farrier Brett "Slippery" Johnstone, who managed to rescue his pregnant mare Lilly and three fillies from floodwaters near his Clermont property.
He posted a video of his horses on social media to share their swim for survival.
ABC Capricornia spoke to Slippery about the desperate efforts and his decision to name Lilly's expected foal "Dawnie Fraser" after the Australian swimming legend.
It's tales like this that reminds us that we are a resilient bunch here in CQ, including our equine companions.
Have a great week, stay safe, and remember, if you have a story idea drop an email to Rockhampton.Regional@abc.net.au
