Canada and America have exchanged military personnel for decades. That arrangement works pretty well unless, say, you have an American president whose orders don’t align with Canadian values and interests. This week we reported on how this awkward situation is playing out. 

In our Science pages we explain how Julia Vitarello, whose daughter died in 2021 of an ultra-rare neurodegenerative disorder, lobbied regulators in America and Britain to simplify and accelerate the process for developing individualised drug treatments. Ms Vitarello started a biotech company to try to work out how to do this at scale. This month marked a turning point in her quest.
