Good morning,

The competition between the United States and China often revolves around military, technological, and economic issues. But I often think back to Nicholas Eberstadt’s 2019 warning that, “few factors influence the long-term competition between great powers as much as changes in the size, capabilities, and characteristics of national populations.” This month, as news broke that China’s birthrate has slumped to the lowest level since 1949, and that the U.S. population is growing at one of its slowest rates ever because of plunging immigration, I’m revisiting Eberstadt’s essay on why demography will determine which countries will lead the world in decades to come.

Until next week,
