South County Basketball made history this week.
The Girls Basketball team captured the Patriot District Championship with two outstanding performances. In the semifinals, the girls defeated Woodson 45-22. Trailing 13-12 at halftime, South County erupted for a 20-3 third quarter to take control. Anna Marsh led the way with 17 points and 8 rebounds. In the finals, the Stallions defeated West Potomac 67-49, jumping out to a 19-5 first quarter lead and never looking back. Anna Marsh, Layla Tull, Natalya Wooten, and Makyah Mason all scored in double figures, while Natalya Mason added 10 rebounds and 6 assists in a dominant all-around effort.
Boys Basketball matched that championship energy. In the semifinals, South County defeated Lake Braddock 53-43 in a focused, wire-to-wire performance and on the shoulders of Sophomore Isaiah Martin's explosive 29 point performance. As the 2 seed, the Stallions traveled to Woodson for the championship and delivered in front of a packed house, earning a 56-46 victory to claim the district title.
For the first time in school history, both our boys and girls basketball teams have won district championships in the same year.
On Saturday the Swim team wrapped up their season in Stafford at the state meet, swimming strong and bringing home more hardware. Individually, Anna Helms (100 Free) and Savannah Harris (100 Free) both finished 7th and the girls 200 and 400 Free Relays, consisting of Helms, Harris, Kira Clark and Ellie Trinh both finished in 8th. As a team, the Stallion girls finished 13th in the state.
South County Robotics was proudly represented by five teams, 40991A through 40991E, at the Prowl at the Potomac event hosted by Potomac Middle School. Competing in a field of 61 teams, this marked our first appearance in the VEX Robotics Competition in more than five years, a major milestone for our STEM and CTE programs.
While rankings matter, the true highlight of the day was the growth of our students. Several team members initially questioned whether they were ready to compete, but they demonstrated tremendous grit by stepping onto the field and embracing the challenge.
Team 40991A finished ranked 21st overall and advanced into the Elimination Rounds as the 12th seed through the alliance selection process. Breaking into the top tier of a 61 team field is an impressive accomplishment for a returning program.
Teams 40991B, C, D, and E battled through tough competition and gained invaluable experience in the pits, troubleshooting mechanical issues under pressure and scouting potential alliances with teams from across the region. Managing more than 40 students across five teams is no small task, and the energy coming out of the event has been outstanding. Students are already back in the lab applying lessons learned and refining their designs.
A special thank you to our coaches, mentors, families, and supporters who helped relaunch this program and make this opportunity possible for our students.
We are not slowing down. The students are energized and ready to build on this momentum. All five teams will compete again on Sunday, February 22, and we are excited to see their continued growth.
