Chicago Tribune Opinion

Monday, February 23, 2026

I'm a longtime fan of the Flatiron Arts Building in Bucktown, where, back in the 1990s. I used to watch lots of Chicago performances. That building, of course, is located on Milwaukee Avenue, one of Chicago's several diagonal streets. Sunday, our architecture columnist Edward Keegan looked at the whole flat iron concept. Citywide.

Did you know that the term "flatiron building" can be applied to any triangular shaped structure with an acute angle? Did you know it was named after the old-fashioned cast-iron home appliance for pressing clothes? Lots more to learn in Ed's fascinating piece.

We've wrapped up our endorsements in the upcoming primary elections; we made an effort to get it done as early voting began Thursday in some places for the March 17 contests. Video cameras are not used in our meetings and we found that the vast majority of candidates were plenty willing to offer reasoned and thoughtful ideas when they were seated around our table. And most of them seemed to like each other far more than you'd think from the TV commercials.

Look below for today's tribute (because that is what it is) to those willing to subject themselves to the bruising battles of running for office.

You can find all our endorsements at chicagotribune.com/opinion. Sunday we ended this project by offering our views on the Republican candidates for governor. They are a notably varied crew and our analysis of their strengths and weaknesses might surprise you.

Meanwhile, Gov. JB Pritzker delivered his so-called "maintenance budget" late last week. What did we think of it? You'll find that below, too.

Also in Tribune Opinion: Our Clarence Page wrote about the late Rev. Jesse Jackson, whom he has covered for decades and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, no less, has an interesting piece for us today, too.

All this and more, along with your letters.

Have a great day. No Nor'easter in Chicago, at least.
