From South Korea–based contributor Jennifer Park: Visiting Somang Prison in Yeoju initially felt like entering any other correctional facility—barred gates, security checkpoints, a concrete exterior set against a mountain road dusted with snow. I expected the emotional weight of confinement. What I didn’t expect was the atmosphere I encountered inside. |
Throughout the day, nearly everyone I met—correctional officers, volunteers, formerly incarcerated men who had returned to visit, and current inmates—greeted me with warmth and unguarded smiles. There was a sense of familiarity in the way people spoke to one another, and I felt more like a guest being welcomed than a reporter entering a prison. |
One of the most striking moments came during a worship service. Nearly 400 men in blue uniforms filed in, and correctional officers sang with them while families sat in the back rows. As we worshiped together, I found myself no longer observing from a distance but participating in a genuine church service. It was a grace-filled time of worship that reshaped how I think about what can happen inside prison walls. |

When Jesus taught, he used parables. The kingdom of God is like yeast, a net, a pearl. Then and today, to grasp wisdom and spiritual insight, we need the concrete. We need stories. In this issue of Christianity Today, we focus on testimony—the stories we tell, hear, and proclaim about God’s redemptive work in the world. Testimony is a personal application of the Good News. You’ll read Marvin Olasky’s testimony from Communism to Christ, Jen Wilkin’s call to biblical literacy, and a profile on the friendship between theologian Miroslav Volf and poet Christian Wiman. In an essay on pickleball, David Zahl reminds us that play is also a testament to God’s grace. As you read, we hope you’ll apply the truths of the gospel in your own life, church, and neighborhood. May your life be a testimony to the reality of God’s kingdom. |
