TheWrap's Drew Taylor told you in January that 2026 was going to be a big year for original animated films, and indeed Sony Pictures Animation's story of an underdog goat basketball player is showing strong legs in its second weekend with $17 million at the box office and just a 38% drop, bringing its domestic total to nearly $60 million after two weeks. Reviews and audience reaction have been strong for the pic, which eschews the bright-and-smooth animation style of Illumination or others for a more pushed, artful style in the vein of the "Spider-Verse" films. It's on track to earn at least $100 million domestic, with a global total that currently stands at $102 million. Original animated films hitting at the box office is key, as many of the biggest studios, like Disney, are in danger of running out of fresh IP. They need new franchises to mine. The success of "Goat" is good news for the box office all around, and it needs it. AMC Theatres reported Monday that attendance in the fourth quarter was down 10%, largely due to lack of product (the stock dropped as a result). Indeed, the holidays had to rely on repeat business from "Zootopia 2" while a fourth "SpongeBob" movie failed to make a splash. Now all eyes are on Pixar's "Hoppers," another original animated film that opens in just two weeks. Can theaters get back to a regular clip of families showing up? Adam Chitwood
