In the 200-odd years since a teenager dreamed up a spooky story on a stormy night in the Swiss Alps, hundreds of others have put their spin on Mary Shelley’s tale of a scientist who bypasses nature to create life, a horrifying—and, arguably, horror-genre-launching—experience for all involved.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, Oscar-nominated actor and second-time director, is the latest to take up the tale of Dr. Frankenstein and his monster. Opening Friday, “The Bride!” joins the roughly 400 other feature films inspired by this 19th-century piece of Gothic fiction with an outsized cultural legacy.
