FCPS School Year Calendar
Good afternoon, Eagles,
I hope everyone enjoyed the first signs of spring this past week, along with the unexpected winter snow! It has been another busy and productive week at school, and I am always grateful for the energy, dedication, and positivity that our students, staff, and families bring to our community each day. Thank you for the many ways you support our school and help our students succeed.
We are finishing up our WIDA testing for our multilingual learners. This is an important assessment that measures student progress in speaking, writing, and reading in English. We are incredibly proud of all of our students for the effort they put into this big test. I also want to extend a sincere thank you to our teachers and staff who worked hard to prepare for and support our students throughout the testing process. Their dedication ensures every student has the opportunity to show their growth and learning.
PTSA Meeting – Tuesday Night Please consider joining us for our next PTSA meeting on Tuesday evening via Zoom. This is a great opportunity to stay connected, hear updates from the school, and support the important work of our PTSA. We hope to see many of you there.
Upcoming Assessments Our IB, SOL, and final exam schedule is included in this message. Please take a few minutes to review the schedule and help ensure students are present and on time for their assessments. Being at school and prepared on testing days helps students do their very best.
Reminder: No School Next Friday. There will be no school next Friday, March 20 in recognition of Eid a cultural observance day.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our students and school community. Have a wonderful weekend!
Amanda Burke Principal
This past weekend, Edison High School Orchestras hosted this year's District 10 Orchestra Assessment. There were approximately 900 students participating. Our Edison volunteers received overwhelmingly positive feedback from teachers, judges, and other community members from the district. For the first time in the orchestra's history, all three orchestras earned a superior rating, which is the highest achievable score. Congratulations to our orchestra students!
As the academic advising and course selection period draws to a close, we want to ensure all families feel confident about their child's educational path. A new feature in SIS ParentVUE allows parents and guardians to easily review and acknowledge their student's course requests for the 2026-27 school year. Please contact our students services department 703-924-8022 for support or assistance. To access this feature:
- Log in to your ParentVUE account.
- Navigate to the Course Request module.
- Review your student’s course request list for next school year.
- To complete the acknowledgment, click Student Info in the left menu.
- Click Edit Information.
- In the Course Request Acknowledgment field, update the acknowledgment field to Yes.
- Click Save Changes.
Families have until Friday, March 27, to review and acknowledge course requests via this new feature.
Visit the FCPS SIS ParentVUE account overview webpage for more instructions and screenshots of this process.
FCPS is administering our Family Engagement Survey, which will be open from Monday, March 9, to Monday, March 23. Your feedback is critical in helping us to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our schools.
Survey topics include:
- Welcoming environment.
- Communication.
- Student success.
- Advocacy.
- Family and school partnerships.
- Community partnerships.
The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
Parents/caregivers will receive a survey link via email from FCPS on March 9. A survey link will also be posted on FCPS’ website. Paper surveys will be available at each school. Please stay tuned for more information.
As a listening leader, connecting with community members across our school division is critical to Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Dr. Reid’s Community Conversations are opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Events will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) on:
-
Tuesday, March 17, from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m., at Glen Forest Elementary School.
-
Monday, March 23, at Ravensworth Elementary School.
-
Monday, April 13, at Belle View Elementary School.
-
Monday, April 20, Westgate Elementary School.
-
Wednesday, April 22, at Crestwood Elementary School.
Child care and interpretation services will be provided. Events are open to all. Visit the superintendent’s engagement page for the most up-to-date information.
There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled.
Fairfax County Public Schools will still exceed the required number of instructional hours for students, as set by the Virginia Department of Education.
About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. They are currently reviewing the county’s 2027 Fiscal Year Advertised Budget and are considering possible adjustments before the final county budget is adopted in May. Provide the county with feedback on how you would like your tax dollars spent by completing this survey.
FCPS’ cell phone policy helps students focus, learn, and engage. When students put their phones away, they have more face-to-face interactions with their peers and teachers and more opportunities to develop resilience and problem-solving skills. Please remind your child that:
-
Cell phones and personal devices (earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell) with the exception of lunch time in designated lunch spaces.
-
Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
If you need to contact your child during the school day, please call our front office at [phone number]. Visit our cell phone policy webpage for more information and answers to frequently asked questions.
We are excited to invite you to our upcoming Parent University on March 26, 2026, from 6:00–7:00 PM as we focus on strengthening our school community through belonging and connection. Research shows that when students feel a strong sense of belonging at school, they are more engaged, confident, and successful—and that connection is even more powerful when families feel included and involved as well.
The evening will begin with a brief presentation on the importance of feeling connected to your school community, followed by breakout discussions where parents can share ideas and explore ways we can work together to improve everyone’s sense of belonging at Edison. We hope you will join us in this important conversation and partner with us to make Edison a place where every student and family feels heard, valued, and included.
If you are unable to attend in person, we invite you to join us virtually using this link for the presentation portion of the evening so you can still be part of the conversation.
RSVP Information: While RSVPs are not required, we would greatly appreciate it if you could let us know whether you plan to attend. This will help us best prepare materials and space for the evening. Please RSVP by March 19, 2026, using this link.
We look forward to seeing you on March 26!
