In the 1890s, Madam C.J. Walker (born to formerly enslaved parents on a Louisiana plantation) had every reason to believe wealth wasn't meant for her.
this is what courage looks like
She chose to pursue it anyway.
By the time she died in 1919, Madam C.J. Walker had become the first self-made female millionaire in American history by building a haircare empire.
She would employ over 40,000 people, fund scholarships, support the NAACP, and donate to the arts.
From $1.50 to living out the wildest of American dreams.
And here’s what I keep coming back to when I think about her story:
She didn't wait until the system made room for her.
She didn't wait until conditions were perfect.
And she didn't wait until she felt “ready.”
She just... started.
Imperfectly, under-resourced, and against the odds.
She started small and built as she went.
What's crazy is, most of us reading this have more resources than Madam Walker ever had in 1890.
We have access to banking, education, the internet, and tools she couldn't have imagined.
And yet so many of us are still waiting.
you rn
Waiting to make more money before we start saving. Waiting to understand finances better before we invest. Waiting for some sign that it's the right time.
Honestly?
Waiting is what’s probably keeping you broke.
Fear. Avoidance. A quiet belief somewhere in the back of your mind that wealth is for other people, not you.
That's what's keeping most people stuck.
Not the math.
Not their income.
Not their circumstances.
FEAR.
Walker didn't start with a business plan.
She started by washing hair and selling homemade products door to door in Denver.
You don't need a perfect budget.
You just need a first step.
kinda like that. CUUUUUTE.
If you're not sure what that step is, I put together a short financial health quiz that can help you figure out exactly what's holding you back and what to do about it.
