Message from the Commander
Fair Oaks Community,
As we transition into the warmer months and approach the summer season, I want to take a moment to share an update on public safety in the Fair Oaks District and offer a few reminders to help keep our community safe.
Year-to-date data shows encouraging progress across several key areas. Overall calls for service are down approximately 15%, with notable reductions in criminal and traffic-related calls. Domestic-related calls for service have also decreased by roughly 9%, and we’ve seen declines in offenses such as larceny, burglary, and simple assault. These trends reflect the strong partnership between our officers and the community we serve.
While these reductions are promising, we continue to see vehicle-related crimes—particularly thefts from motor vehicles and theft of vehicle parts—as persistent concerns. These incidents are often crimes of opportunity and can be prevented with a few simple precautions.
As the weather improves and more people are out enjoying parks, shopping centers, and neighborhood activities, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to safeguard their property:
- Always lock your vehicle doors, even when parked at home
- Remove valuables or keep them out of sight
- Lock your home doors and windows, including garages
- Use exterior lighting and consider security cameras where possible
- Be aware of unfamiliar individuals or suspicious activity in your neighborhood
We also encourage residents to register your home or business cameras to Connect Fairfax. This system enhances the partnerships we have with the community and allows us to better fight crime.
Go to Connect Fairfax at https://connectfairfaxcounty.org/ to learn more and register your cameras.
Traffic Safety Reminders
With longer daylight hours and warmer weather, we will see an increase in pedestrians, runners, and children riding bicycles throughout our neighborhoods. This seasonal change makes traffic safety more important than ever.
We ask everyone—drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists—to do their part:
- Drivers: Wear your seatbelt, reduce speeds in residential areas, and remain alert for pedestrians and cyclists, especially near parks, schools, and crosswalks
- Pedestrians: Use designated crosswalks whenever possible and wear bright or reflective clothing so you are easily seen, particularly during early morning or evening hours
- Cyclists: Always wear a helmet, obey traffic laws, and ride in a predictable and visible manner
A few extra seconds of awareness can prevent serious incidents and help ensure everyone gets to their destination safely.
Our commitment to you is for our officers to continually focus on proactive patrols, traffic enforcement, and community engagement efforts. Your awareness and involvement remain critical components of our success.
Together, we can build on this positive momentum and ensure that Fair Oaks remains a safe and vibrant place to live, work, and visit.
Respectfully,
Captain Richard Theal Assistant Commander, Fair Oaks District Station Fairfax County Police Department
