A U.S. aircraft mobilized to support the search and rescue mission for a downed jet was struck by Iranian fire and crashed, an official told NBC News.

The single-pilot A-10 Thunderbolt made it to Kuwaiti airspace, where the pilot ejected and is safe, according to the official.
