“Climate Change Denial Sees a Resurgence in Trump’s Washington” is the headline on a story in the New York Times today about an environmental conference in the nation’s capital. But the story is not so much about people who deny that the climate changes. Those involved in the Heartland Institute event appear to hold a range of views about such changes and the likely results. What they all seem to share is a belief that the world’s climate is not in crisis. The Times could more precisely accuse them of “crisis denial,” but perhaps Timesfolk are concerned that some readers might find it appealing
that the subjects of the story aren’t given to panic. Maxine Joselow reports for the Times: Climate change is a hoax perpetrated by “leftist politicians.” Fossil fuels are the greenest energy sources. More carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will be harmless. These were some of the false claims made at a conference on Wednesday held by groups that
reject the overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change. Hold on a moment. Have leftist politicians never made frightening forecasts of climate catastrophe that were later revealed to be erroneous—and are we to believe that politicians never use fear as a tool to motivate voters? Moving right along, can an efficient energy source that requires a smaller footprint than solar and wind farms not be considered green? Calling something “green” or not is a matter of opinion in any case, not a falsifiable hypothesis.
