Comedian Julio Torres’ new comedy special Color Theories recently dropped on HBO Max, though that title’s a bit misleading. Think of it as Color Assertions, because Torres spends his time patiently walking us through not how various colors relate to each other, but rather how they exist in the world, the vibes they give off, their essential meanings. These invariably convincing assertions range from the kind you know in your gut – yellow as joy, for example – to those that resonate on a higher intellectual / cultural / psychosexual plane of existence — “lilac is being a mom, but purple is being a stepmother.” No matter your color sensitivity — and I say this as an out-and-proud possessor of deuteranomalous (green-deficient) vision — Torres will make you laugh and nod your head in furious agreement with the kind of observations that seem so obvious you won’t believe it’s taken this long for anyone to point out. You’ll certainly never look at navy blue the same way again. That frickin’ narc. – Glen Weldon
I have been utterly delighted by the breezy rom-com anime, You and I Are Polar Opposites. It follows the bubbly Suzuki, who has a huge crush on her reserved classmate, Tani. Unlike many slow burns in the genre, we jump right into their relationship and spend lots of time with their equally charming friends. Quite a few opposites attract, and I'm very excited to see how it unfolds in the second season, which starts in July. You can watch the entire first season on Crunchyroll now. – Producer Liz Metzger |
