The Best Defense
PEN America is teaming with publishers and literary organizations to confront a
growing wave of harassment and threats of violence aimed at authors, spurred by book bans. This week, we’re rolling out the finalists for our Bookstore of the Year and Sales Rep of the Year—starting with
Greedy Reads in Baltimore and
Doris Allen of Scholastic—ahead of the announcement of our two winners this Friday. And with the Bologna Children’s Book Fair kicking off today, we rounded up all the
must-see events at this year’s program. In other news, Tucker Carlson is
launching an eponymous imprint with Skyhorse Publishing, with an inaugural list featuring titles from Russell Brand, Milo Yiannopoulos, and more, per the
Wall Street Journal. Starting next month, Amazon will end its software support for
Kindle devices released in 2012 or earlier, preventing them from connecting to the Kindle Store and downloading new e-books, according to
Wired. The
Los Angeles Times explores how
streaming platforms ignited a boom of popular YA adaptations, from
Heated Rivalry to
The Summer I Turned Pretty. The
Shy Girl controversy
continues to rattle authors, who worry about inaccurate AI detection and increased paranoia throughout the publishing industry, the
New York Times reports. And
Slate argues that AI is unraveling a
once-thriving ecosystem of online writing communities.
