Message from Mr. Greata
Dear Woodson Families,
It’s been an incredible week at Woodson, filled with energy from our future students and celebrations of our current ones. From the halls to the ball field, the Cavalier spirit is stronger than ever.
Last week was all about the next generation. We hosted over 600 rising 9th graders from Frost for our Cav Cameo. Our student leaders did a fantastic job introducing them to our various clubs and activities, getting everyone hyped for the 2026-2027 school year! On the diamond, our Baseball team hosted Little League Night. It was a heartwarming evening as local little leaguers joined the team on the field for introductions; we even took a trip down memory lane with some "throwback" photos of our current players from their own little league days.
The Woodson Spring Chess Tournament, organized by Mr. Nah, has also officially concluded. A huge congratulations to our winners of this "Woodson Classic": Tournament Champion Jack Acar (clinching the win from a #5 seed!), Final Four finalists Nolawi Hailemariam, Jerry Zhao, and Declan Hagopian, and Bracket Challenge winners Mr. Rosebrock (Staff) and Nolawi Hailemariam (Student).
We also shared a special moment on the track this week during Senior Night. Congratulations to our graduating track athletes! We are so proud of your journey and can’t wait to see the bright futures ahead of you.
Looking ahead, April is the Month of the Military Child. To show our support for our amazing military-connected families, we are asking everyone to wear purple this Wednesday. Let’s "Purple Out" the school to celebrate their strength and sacrifice. You can also join us in Cav Hall this week to celebrate the incredible creativity of our students during our art showcases. The Pyramid Art Show is Tuesday, April 14, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, and the Woodson Senior Art Show is Wednesday, April 15, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM.
Senior families, don’t forget to secure your spot for the All-Night Grad Party! The PTSO has extended the Early Bird Special through April. A ticket provides full access to Dave & Buster’s, including the human crane, unlimited video games, food, drinks, and $25,000 in "Cav Cash" for the casino and raffle prizes. You can purchase tickets at the Woodson PTSO Senior Store.
Finally, please note that there is no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, due to the Virginia statewide election. However, student activities, athletic practices, and scheduled events will proceed as planned.

Volunteers Needed for AP Testing
Woodson High School is in search of parent volunteers and/or recent graduate volunteers for this spring’s AP testing. This is a great opportunity to volunteer during the school day! Training will be provided.
AP exams will take place from May 4th – May 15th. There are two test sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Morning test sessions require proctors to be present from 7:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m. (approximately). Afternoon test sessions require proctors to be present from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (approximately).
Please contact Elizabeth Walter ehwalter@fcps.edu if you are able to volunteer and help proctor. As always, we greatly appreciate the support. Thank you!
AP Testing
AP Testing season is upon us! In a few short weeks students in AP classes will begin taking their AP exam for potential college credit. Please take a minute to review the AP exam schedule to ensure you and your child know when they have an AP exam. In addition to the review your child’s teacher is doing in the classroom, FCPS is offering virtual review sessions through Schoology. Directions and offerings can be found here (our own Mrs. Wright and Mr. Pugh are running two of them). AP Classroom also has daily videos to help students review and prepare for test day. Here are some thing s to know for test day :
- If it is a morning exam, students must be in the cafeteria by 7:30 AM. Please make sure they have enough time to get through security by 7:30 AM
- If it is an afternoon exam, please make sure students have a ride home, the exams run approximately 3-4 hours, a ride home via the bus is not guaranteed. The meeting location for the afternoon sessions will be communicated to the student closer to the date of the exam.
- Students must bring a fully charged laptop, charger, #2 pencils, and calculator.
- Students cannot bring phones, smartwatch, tablet, fitness tracker, recording device, camera, backpack, notes, or any electronics that could connect to the internet. Students observed with any of these devices out or have on their person during an exam or a scheduled break will be dismissed from the exam
- Students must be on time for the exam. Once an exam has begun, no student will be allowed to enter the exam room and College Board will not grant requests for late testing.
More specific information will be coming home with your students as we get closer to the exam date. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Mrs. Todd, Advanced Academic Coordinator. phtodd@fcps.edu

- Federal law requires schools to provide students one SOL test in reading, in mathematics, and in science during grades 9-12. These assessments provide information about student achievement to the parent/guardian, school, division, and state.
- State law requires students to verify credits to fulfill Standard and Advanced Studies diploma requirements, as outlined on the Graduation Requirements and Course Planning | Fairfax County Public Schools webpage.
- SOL tests are the most common way students earn the verified credits they need. However, performance assessments (Social Studies only) or substitute assessments approved by the Virginia Board of Education may be another option available for your student to verify certain credits.
An SOL Tests in High Schools | Fairfax County Public Schools webpage provides more information about SOL EOC tests in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). Information about timing and process for accessing SOL test results can be found on the SOL Test Results | Fairfax County Public Schools webpage. All SOL assessments are taken in-person at school. School staff will schedule and communicate specific testing dates for your student based on their individual assessment needs. If you do not want your student to participate in SOL assessments, you may choose to refuse testing. However, any decision to refuse SOL tests should be made in consultation with school staff to allow full consideration of any potential implications for on-time graduation. See the Information for Families about Testing and Assessments | Fairfax County Public Schools webpage section for information to support this decision.
If you have questions about SOL testing, please contact your student’s school counselor or the assessment coach/school test coordinator, Kathleen Crosson.

Students may be taking one or more Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course (EOC) assessments between April 20 and May 20. All SOL assessments are taken in-person at school. School staff will schedule and communicate specific testing dates for your student based on their individual assessment needs. If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your student missing a testing day, please notify Woodson’s Assessment Coach, Kathleen Crosson, as soon as possible.
SOL Season - Personal Electronic Devices are Prohibited
As SOL season is approaching, we want to remind families that students may not have access to their electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) in the SOL testing environment, except in the case of a documented medical need. Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.

Counselor Corner
We hope all families had a restful spring break! We are looking forward to a smooth 4th quarter. Counselors completed Academic Advising, and all schedule change requests are closed at this time. We are using current course requests to plan for staffing and hiring for next school year. As in prior years, we will offer a schedule change window during the 3rd week of school next year for students who are reconsidering a course choice.
FCPS Academy class admission decisions were emailed directly to students to their FCPS school account. Please have your child check their email to confirm their academy class status. All course requests in SIS have been updated accordingly as well.
Counselors also finished visiting all 10th grade health classrooms to deliver wellness lessons and review self-advocacy skills so students can keep their wellness as a top priority.
We hosted our 3rd annual Junior Focus Day last week! It was so exciting to see the sessions buzzing with student learning and engagement about post-secondary planning. Whether your pathway leads to the military, workforce, college, or a technical school, students received valuable information. Refer to the Junior Focus Day padlet for workshop details.
We celebrate our military children and families this month of April, the Month of the Military Child. Wednesday this week is Purple-Up Day and we will host a breakfast for military-connected students and their families in their honor.
Our focus now returns to seniors as we edge closer to graduation on June 4th. Counselors will visit Government classes in May to assist seniors in completing the FCPS Senior Survey in Naviance. This allows us to send their final transcript and acknowledge scholarships awarded. Here’s to a great 4th quarter!
Partners for Safe Teen Driving Seminars
Attention all 10th grade students and their parents. All new drivers and parents must attend a state mandated traffic safety seminar, Partners for Safe Teen Driving. Please mark your calendar for the Woodson seminars for 2025-2026. Seminars will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will take place in the Woodson Auditorium. You do NOT have to register for this, attendance will be taken at the presentation.
