2026 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences
NHLBI’s Dr. Swee Lay Thein has been co-awarded the prestigious 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for her extraordinary work investigating the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease (SCD) and beta thalassemia and accelerating the translation of this basic research into therapeutic applications for SCD and other blood disorders.
The 2026 Prize specifically recognizes Dr. Thein for her research on mechanisms of hemoglobin biology and for validating transformative therapeutic targets for treatment of SCD and beta-thalassemia. Learn more about Dr. Thein and her laboratory’s research.
