Chicago Tribune Opinion

Wednesday, May 6, 2026

Good morning, Chicago.

If for some reason the onslaught of email and social media marketing has missed you, Mother’s Day is Sunday. But don’t worry. There is still time to buy your mom a gift and snag a brunch reservation. The holiday brings up complex feelings for many people, including columnist Laura Washington, who lost her mom in 2023. Some brands have begun to ask consumers if they’d prefer to opt out of the deluge of promotions for the holiday. Laura thinks that’s an interesting idea, but can you really opt out of remembering your mom? Read more of her thoughts below.

Columnist Steve Chapman compares how Democrats reacted to allegations of sexual assault against Cesar Chavez and U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell versus how Republicans have handled accusations against President Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth.

The Tribune Editorial Board takes its focus south today, to Chatham, where yet another Walgreens is set to close, and then across the state line to Hammond, where the city’s mayor has been busy trying to get the Bears to move there.

Also today, don’t miss several leaders of local arts organizations calling for action at the state level over ghost tickets. Be wary of fake tickets to see Snoop Dog at Ravinia this summer, they write. And be sure to check out our letters from readers.

Thanks for reading.
