DeSantis, Trump administrations discuss closing Alligator Alcatraz

The immigration detainment center in the Everglades is reportedly in talks to close, potentially ending a controversial chapter in state law enforcement.

The facility has received criticism for its cost, its environmental impact and many reports of mistreatment inside its walls.

Scheduled to be sentenced: Two Tampa men were found guilty last week of distributing fentanyl that resulted in the overdose death of a USF student in 2024, federal prosecutors said Thursday. 

Back in jail: In 2024, a man was convicted of decapitating his newly adopted dog and dumping its remains in Fort De Soto Park. He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail Wednesday to serve the nine-and-a-half months left of his sentence.

Investigation ongoing: A 6-year-old girl died Wednesday from injuries suffered in a two-car crash in Oldsmar last week, deputies said.

Called for guardrails: Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law Thursday to regulate large-scale data centers in Florida, promising that consumers would not bear the burden of the artificial intelligence boom with higher electric bills or more scarce water resources.

 
 

SPORTS

Production dip: After averaging 46 goals the previous three seasons, Lightning center Brayden Point had just 18 this season, and only one in the seven-game playoff series against the Canadiens.

National coverage: Thursday was the ESPN debut of Rays players like Junior Caminero,  Chandler Simpson and Jonathan Aranda.

Stadium talks: The Rays say if there’s no deal for a Tampa ballpark by June 1, then it needs to be soon after.

Making a splash? The Bucs' first two draft picks, Miami edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. and Missouri linebacker Josiah Trotter, likely will start from Day 1. But what about the rest of the draft class?

The future of The Dalí Museum

The $65 million expansion will include new gallery spaces to combine art and technology, a learning center for K-12 students and adults, event spaces for corporate and cultural events, and a “striking new exterior.” We got a peek inside.
