May is Older Americans and Adult Abuse Prevention Month: Champion Your Health
Each May, Fairfax County honors Older Americans and Adult Abuse Prevention Month (OAM). It's a time to recognize the ways older adults enrich our families and communities, and to renew our commitment to their health, safety, and independence. This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” emphasizes staying well, preventing illness, and taking an active role in your own care. You can learn more and sign up for health and wellness workshops through ElderLink.
This month also highlights the importance of preventing abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults and incapacitated adults. Fairfax County Adult Protective Services (APS) investigates reports involving adults who live alone, with family, or in settings like nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, or group homes. If you suspect abuse, neglect, or exploitation, call 703-324-7450 to make a report. To see how APS makes a difference, watch the video “Every Senior Deserves Safety and Dignity,” produced by the Department of Family Services Adult and Aging division.

HB602: Open Captions Become Law in Virginia
Movies in Virginia are about to become more accessible. On April 6, Governor Abigail Spanberger signed House Bill 602 into law. This legislation requires movie theaters across the Commonwealth to offer open captioning for certain showings so that on‑screen dialogue, sound effects, and other audio details are visible to everyone in the audience.
The new law also strengthens rules for closed captioning and sets clear accessibility standards for theaters to follow. Championed by Delegate Phil Hernandez and supported by advocates statewide, this landmark law will take effect on July 1, 2026, expanding access to the movie‑going experience for many Virginians.
