From the District Department of Transportation
Beginning tentatively May 15, 2026, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily close the southbound ramp from George Washington Parkway to I-66 eastbound Theodore Roosevelt Bridge. This ramp closure will remain in place through mid-August 2026. Note, the ramp access to westbound US 50 (Rosslyn) will remain open during this period.
Concurrently with this closure, the US-50 ramp from Arlington Boulevard to I-66 eastbound Theodore Roosevelt Bridge will reopen to traffic.
A posted detour will be in place for the southbound ramp utilizing the George Washington Memorial Parkway to Arlington Memorial Bridge.
About the Project
This closure is necessary for the ongoing rehabilitation of the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge to perform structural repairs and replace the bridge deck.

From Saturday, May 16 to Saturday, May 23, the Arlington Ridge Road/Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge will close during off-peak hours to allow crews to install and secure steel beams as part of the reconstruction of the west side of the bridge.
The bridge will be closed between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Outside of these hours, all traffic will continue to use the east side of the bridge.
Bus stops on Mount Vernon Avenue between West Reed Avenue and South Glebe Road will close. Metrobus routes A11 and A12 will detour via West Glebe Road.
About the Project
Arlington County is reconstructing the Arlington Ridge Road/Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge between Arlington and the City of Alexandria. Currently, crews are working on the west side of the bridge before proceeding to the east side of the bridge. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2027.
The Leading Through Interval (LTI) pilot introduces a new signal timing strategy that creates a brief interval at the start of the signal phase.
During this interval, vehicles traveling straight (or "through") are allowed to proceed, while turning movements are temporarily paused. At the same time, pedestrians and cyclists are be permitted to cross during the active “walk” signal. Once the LTI ends, turning vehicles are allowed to proceed.
Pilot Project Goals
The goal of this pilot is to reduce conflicts between turning vehicles and pedestrians/bicyclists in the crosswalk, enhancing safety and visibility for all road users.
This pilot project is currently active at the following locations:
- Wilson Blvd & N Lynn St
- Washington Blvd & 10th St N
The pilot locations were chosen due to the geometry and existing dedicated turn lanes, as well as crash histories and the high volumes of pedestrian and vehicle activity.
We are seeking feedback on the Leading Through Interval pilot project. This feedback form runs through Monday, June 1st.
Neighborhood Complete Streets Projects (Extended)
There are four Neighborhood Complete Streets projects in design right now that are open for feedback to inform next steps in design until May 17.
