Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

Thank you again to our incredible families for everything you did to make our Staff Appreciation Week so special. Your kindness, thoughtful gestures, and words of encouragement meant the world to our educators.

We also want to extend a huge shout-out to our PTA. Your constant support and coordination ensure that our staff feels valued and celebrated—not just last week, but all year long. We are truly lucky to have such a dedicated partnership.

We are officially gearing up for our "This is Us!" event next Thursday! You may have heard our Cubbies talking about finding little bears all throughout our school that is creating great excitement and anticipation for this event. It is going to be a true celebration of the extraordinary community we’ve built together. We hope you will join us for an evening of connection and school pride.

We can’t wait to see your family there as we celebrate the "us" in our school community!

Warmly,

Melissa Miller, Principal

Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Family Input Form for 2026-27 Class Placement

With the end of the year quickly approaching, we are already looking ahead and planning for the 2026 -27 school year. We want to share some insight into our student placement process to ensure transparency and clarity for all families. Our goal is to create balanced, heterogeneous learning environments. To achieve this, we consider numerous criteria and several key factors, which include, a mix of performance levels and learning abilities, balance the distribution of girls and boys, and grouping students to ensure our resource teachers can provide maximum support. Placement decisions are a collaborative, intentional, and thoughtful effort involving current teachers, counselors, and specialists to set up our Cubbies for success.

To maintain a fair and effective learning environment, we do not honor requests for specific teachers. We prioritize instructional needs and individual student strengths above all else. Additionally, staffing assignments can change over the summer due to enrollment fluctuations. To avoid confusion or disappointment, staff members are instructed not to share placement information until the end of summer when rosters are finalized.

While we cannot accept specific teacher requests, we highly value your perspective on your child’s learning style and needs. If there is essential information you would like us to consider, please let us know by completing this family input form by May 15, 2026.

Your feedback, combined with our professional staff’s recommendations, helps us create the best possible environment for your child’s success. Thank you for your partnership!

This is Us!

This Is Us! Night is coming up next Thursday, May 21 from 5:30-7:00 PM at Cub Run! We’re excited to celebrate together and hope you can join us for this special evening. Our website with more info: CLICK HERE

We’ll have amazing performances from students and families, food from all over the world, games, and a chance to see things that represent the many cultures/traditions in our community. It’s truly a night to celebrate who we are and where we come from.

We’ve also been hiding tiny bears around the school! If students find one, they can bring it to “This Is Us!” Night for a chance to enter our raffle and win some fun prizes.

This event is completely free and will be taking place in the cafeteria- all we’re asking is that our Cubbies show up, enjoy the evening, and support one another as we celebrate our community. See you there!

SOL Scores & ParentVue

Cub Run students have begun their SOL testing in grades 3-6. We recognize that every student is different—some may be curious about their score, while for others, this information might cause unnecessary stress. We encourage you to consider your child’s individual needs before discussing their results.

Preliminary scores are being updated on Wednesdays and Fridays and could take several days before they are be visible in SIS ParentVUE.

By the end of July. Students and parents/guardians will be able to view overall SOL test scores in ParentVUE Test History and StudentVUE Test History.

Summer Device Checkout Request

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is excited to support student learning over the summer. This Summer Learning Resources Webpage includes optional digital activities in Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies for students in Grades K-6. The activities are grouped by grade level and match what students have learned in school this year. Families can use them anytime to review, practice, or explore new ideas at home.

Resources utilize digital tools that students may have used throughout the year such as Lexia, ST Math, Science A-Z, Pebble Go, Gizmos, Newsela, MyOn, and Britannica Elementary.

These activities require a device to access, and some require students to log in through their FCPS Google account. Students may use a home device or their FCPS school device. If your child needs to borrow a device, they may check one out from their school no later than Friday, May 29th by filling out the CRES Student Device Checkout Form for Summer Technology below. (Devices will need to be returned by July 30.) Some digital resources in Clever may be temporarily unavailable in August in preparation for the new school year.

If you need technology support, please visit the Families: Tools and Technology page.

We hope everyone has a fun, safe, and learning filled summer!

Attendance is Important: Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

School accreditation ratings in Virginia are based on student performance across nine school quality indicators within the state’s Student Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). One of these indicators is chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason and whether the absence was excused or unexcused.  A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10% - that is only 2 days per month on average.

As of May 13, Cub Run’s Year to Date Chronic Absenteeism rate has increased to 10.5%, being in the yellow zone. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can move into an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.

Did you know? Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Consistent attendance helps students build confidence, maintain friendships, and stay on track with their lessons.

Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit our website for more attendance resources

Positivity Project

This week, our school is focusing on the character strength of of Leadership. Leadership means valuing each person in your group and encouraging everyone to do their best.

Leadership can be formal, like being a team captain, or informal, like helping others work together. It’s about getting things done while keeping the group’s spirit strong. Leadership isn’t just about telling people what to do — it’s about listening, understanding others, solving problems, and inspiring everyone to work toward a common goal.

As students learn more about leadership, they will see how working together with others can help them achieve more. Being a good leader helps build confidence and a strong sense of self.

To practice and encourage the character strength of leadership at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Thank you for your support!

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify us as soon as possible.

Learn more about how to support your child and why test participation matters.

FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Learn more about the documentation required and the steps to develop a safe menu for students.

FCPS CARES

Want a quick way to recognize an employee or team? Share an FCPS CARES! Families, colleagues, and students are all invited to submit. The FCPS CARES is automatically sent to the recipient(s) and their supervisor, and is posted on fcps.edu. Additionally, each month one school in our region wins a staff celebration from HR.
