~George Pope Morris “HELP!” I screamed at the top of my lungs as the wobbly metal extension ladder slipped. I was on my tiptoes on the top rung, hugging the flagpole with all my might. Somehow I was the one chosen to make the final adjustment of the brass ball on the very top of the forty-foot towering flagpole as my husband and son steadied the ladder from the ground below. Just weeks earlier we had learned that one of our sons would be deployed with the United States Army’s 82nd Airborne Division to the Persian Gulf in Operation Desert Shield. This came on the heels of our other son’s honorable discharge from his service with the United States Navy where he served on the USS Ranger. (Keep reading)
