US President Donald Trump says he paused a planned attack on Iran after Gulf leaders urged restraint and Tehran sent a new peace proposal to Washington through Pakistan. Trump said there was now a “very good chance” of reaching a deal with Iran, as questions remain over what the latest diplomatic push could mean for the war.
Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin is visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping days after Trump travelled to China. Analysts say the summit underscores Beijing’s growing global clout amid tensions between the US, on the one hand, and Russia and China on the other, over the wars in Iran and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, authorities have identified the three men killed in the attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego as Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad. Mosque officials said all three men helped respond to the shooting, which police are investigating as a possible hate crime.
A lack of progress in US-China talks makes Putin confident in heading to Beijing, while for China, hosting the back-to-back visits is a diplomatic flex.
