Memorial Day is here!
And if you’re anything like most people, somewhere between the cookout and the checkout line, things are about to get a little financially loose.
Hey, no judgement. That's just how holidays tend to work.
The good news: you don’t have to choose between having fun and staying on track.
So here's 5 ways to enjoy this weekend without wrecking your June.
Set a number before you leave the house
|
not before you set your number |
Not a budget spreadsheet, just a number.
“Today, I’m spending $X.” That’s it.
When you have a number in your head, you make different decisions, even if you don’t stick to it perfectly.
Clarity beats discipline every time.
Cash is your friend this weekend
Leave the card at home for the fun stuff.
Take out cash for the cookout, the gas station, and the impulse stops.
When it’s gone, it’s gone.
Physical money creates friction, and friction creates awareness. I want you to enjoy your money.
So go ahead, have a taquito or two...
But don't put it on credit.
A card lets you sleepwalk. Cash wakes you up.
Separate “celebration” from “compensation”
Most holiday overspending isn’t really about the holiday.
It’s about finally getting a break and feeling like you deserve to treat yourself after a hard stretch.
That feeling is real.
But it’s worth asking: am I celebrating, or am I compensating?
One feels good in the morning. The other doesn’t.
Make a “before June” decision, not an “after July” one
Most people say they’ll get serious about money “after summer.”
But summer is three months of Memorial Days, Fourth of Julys, and Labor Days.
The wait will cost you more than the weekend will, so if something’s been sitting on your mental list, make the call now.
The right time isn’t after the holiday.
It’s right now.
Give yourself permission to have fun
This isn’t about restriction.
It’s about intention.
Go to the cookout, buy the ice overpriced cream, and enjoy the day off.
Just do it on purpose, not on autopilot.
You don’t have to be perfect to make progress.
This weekend is a great place to practice that.
And if you're really struggling to get your shit together...
I've got good news.
I'm casting for the Dollarwise YouTube channel, and I want YOU to be on it.
So if you're in the Austin area and you're down to talk finances: CLICK HERE!
It'll be a ton of fun, and you'll even get paid.
(Great way to offset that glizzy splurge tbh.)
Have a great Memorial Day.
Taquitos,
Caleb "Money Memories" Hammer
P.S. The people who change their financial lives don’t do it by being perfect over a holiday weekend.
They do it by making one intentional decision at a time.
This weekend counts.
