Today: The ergonomic (and creative) pleasures of writing on a treadmill. Plus …

The unexpected tool that helped Ann Patchett write her new novel

Best-selling author Ann Patchett has a new novel out this week — the tenth in her decades-long writing career. (Our colleagues over at the Book Review said everyone will be talking about it this year. If our newsletter team Slack is any indication, they’re right.)

Ann recently told us that all the slumping, slouching, and hunching that happens while writing at her computer is hard on her body. The unexpected solution? A treadmill desk.

She says it keeps her posture “perfect” while working, which has alleviated pain in her neck, arms, wrists, and hands. It could be helpful for just about anyone with a desk job — whether you’re writing your next novel or simply drafting emails.

Plus: The best standing desks

While Ann’s desk is no longer on the market, a great standing desk (combined with an under-desk treadmill) would work just as well. Our favorite accommodates a wide range of heights and is very easy to use.

Plus, it’s pretty good-looking→

All of our testers loved this eye cream’s metal applicator, which feels cooling and luxe. And the formula is great, too — soothing, depuffing, and gentle on sensitive eyes.
