I think the key with cast iron is to avoid soap and just use hot water and a stiff brush. After rinsing, dry it thoroughly over low heat on the stove. Then apply a very thin layer of oil—grapeseed or flaxseed work well. Let it smoke for a bit and then let it cool. The seasoning builds up over time. I have been using the same pan for about three years now and it is incredibly non-stick at this point. The trick is really patience and not rushing the process. Acidic foods like tomatoes can strip the seasoning so I try to avoid those in the cast iron. For cornbread though nothing beats it. The crust comes out perfectly every time. One other thing I forgot to mention is that you should avoid sudden temperature changes. Dropping a cold pan onto a hot burner or running cold water over a hot pan can cause cracking. Let it cool down naturally before cleaning. That has helped me maintain the surface integrity over time.

The trailhead is about forty minutes from town on a gravel road. The path itself is around six miles round trip with moderate elevation gain. There is a stream crossing about halfway that is usually easy to step across unless it has been raining a lot. The payoff at the top is a wide open meadow with views of the valley below. I would recommend going early in the morning to beat the heat and also to have a better chance of seeing wildlife. Last time I spotted a few deer and some wild turkeys. The trail is well marked so you should not have trouble navigating. Just bring plenty of water and some snacks. There are not any facilities out there. I think you would really enjoy it.

The trail is mostly shaded which helps a lot during warmer months. There is a picnic table at the summit that makes a nice spot to rest and take in the scenery. I usually allow about three to four hours total including stops. The elevation gain is steady but not overly steep so it is manageable for most fitness levels.
