The House has passed the No Aid for Ghost Students Act, a bill that would require the Education Department to screen federal financial aid applicants for identity fraud. The legislation largely codifies a fraud-detection system launched by the Education Department in April, which requires high-risk applicants to verify their identities. Rep. Burgess Owens, R-Utah, introduced the bill in response to reports of scammers using fake identities to steal federal financial aid.
