Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Greetings SoCo families,

As we wrap up our final full week of school, it is hard to believe how quickly this year has flown by. This is a wonderful time to reflect on the many memories we have created together: the accomplishments we celebrated, the challenges we overcame, and the friendships that were formed along the way. As we approach the finish line, I encourage our students, staff, and families to take pride in all that has been accomplished this year and to cherish the relationships and experiences that have made South County such a special place to learn, grow, and belong.

Student and Staff Belonging

Four Years, One Unforgettable Finish Line

Graduation was a truly memorable celebration and a fitting tribute to the incredible accomplishments of the Class of 2026. For me, it was especially meaningful, as this was the first graduating class for whom I had the privilege of serving as principal throughout all four years of their high school journey. Watching our students cross the stage, surrounded by proud families, friends, and staff, was a powerful reminder of the relationships, growth, and achievements that make South County such a special community.

GRADUATION

A Sight of Stallion Strength

Our Athletic Awards Ceremony was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the dedication, perseverance, and achievements of our student-athletes. It was inspiring to hear stories of teamwork, leadership, and resilience while recognizing the many accomplishments earned both on and off the field, court, track, and mat. Congratulations to all of our athletes and coaches for representing South County with pride and demonstrating what it means to Stand Strong throughout the year.

Sunset on a Senior Year

Our Senior Sunset celebration provided a perfect opportunity for the Class of 2026 to enjoy one final evening together as South County students. As they shared food, danced, played games, and laughed with friends on the track field, the setting sun served as a beautiful metaphor for their high school journey; bringing one remarkable chapter to a close while casting light on the opportunities that lie ahead. Surrounded by friendship and memories, our seniors watched the horizon together, knowing that while the sun was setting on their time at South County, it was also rising on their next adventure.

A Standing Ovation for SoCo Stars

We are incredibly proud of William Waugh and Elijah Williams for earning CAPPIE Award nominations and representing South County's outstanding theater program on one of the region's biggest stages. It was a privilege to join them, along with several of our talented theater students, at Constitution Hall for an evening dedicated to celebrating excellence in the performing arts. Their nominations reflect not only their individual talent and hard work, but also the creativity, passion, and teamwork that make our theater program shine so brightly.

STUDENTS NOMINATIONS

Making Waves and Making History

Congratulations to South County graduate Yamato for his outstanding performance at the Special Olympics Summer Games in Richmond last weekend. Yamato earned a Gold Medal in the 50-yard breaststroke while setting a new personal record and also placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle. We are incredibly proud of his dedication, perseverance, and achievement, and we congratulate him on this remarkable accomplishment as he concludes his South County High School journey.

Scoops of Appreciation

Our staff enjoyed a well-deserved Ice Cream Social after school as an opportunity to relax, connect, and celebrate another successful year together. Much like the perfect sundae, our school is made stronger by the unique talents, personalities, and contributions that each staff member brings to the mix. Thank you to our incredible faculty and staff for the care, commitment, and heart they pour into serving our students every day. Here they are waiting patiently in line on a VERY humid day! A special shout-out to Culture Champions for coordinating this event.

Coming Attractions: 2026-27

Here are a few events for which we have already secured dates:

Stallion Stampede – August 20, 1:00-3:00

Back to School Night – September 8, 6:00-7:30

We also have three initiatives that will begin next year:

  1. Unplugged and Ready to Learn:

Senate Bill 108 requires all public-school divisions to have policies that significantly restrict student cell phone use during the school day. The expectation is that phones are to be turned off and put away from the first bell to the last bell, including during lunch and passing periods, with limited exceptions for medical needs, IEPs, 504 Plans, or other approved accommodations. The goal is to reduce distractions, improve student focus and learning, strengthen face-to-face interactions, and support student well-being. **

At South County, we are committed to implementing this requirement in a way that supports student learning while maintaining clear communication with families. Additional information about our school-specific procedures will be shared before the start of the new school year.

  1. Building an Even Strong Stallion Community

Next year, we’ll implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), a framework used by schools across the country to promote positive behavior, strengthen relationships, and create a supportive learning environment for all students. PBIS focuses on clearly teaching expectations, recognizing positive choices, and helping students develop the skills they need to be successful both in and out of the classroom. This initiative aligns with our commitment to fostering a positive school culture where every student feels connected, valued, and empowered to thrive.

  1. Grading for Growth

As we transition to Evidence-Based Grading and a Rolling Gradebook model next year, we want to help families better understand what these changes mean for students. The goal is to focus less on earning points and more on demonstrating learning, growth, and mastery over time. Please review the parent guide below for an overview of the new grading practices that will be implemented beginning in the 2026-27 school year. More information will be shared in the weeks prior to the start of the new year.

By the Numbers, Beyond Measure

As we close the 2025-2026 school year, we are proud of the many accomplishments achieved by our students and staff. While this list represents only a sample of the successes we celebrated this year, it highlights the excellence, growth, and dedication that continue to make South County such a special place.

  • Earned Virginia Distinguished Accreditation status.
  • Reduced chronic absenteeism from 19% to 12% over the past four years.
  • Named a Top 25 High School in Northern Virginia.
  • Earned the Jostens Gold School of Distinction Award.
  • Celebrated our 20th Anniversary and hosted signature events such as Asian Night, International Night, and the Art Gala.
  • Earned Blue Ribbon recognition in all three music programs.
  • Indoor Drumline placed 3rd in the world.
  • Boys and Girls Basketball won District and Regional Championships, while Crew finished among the Top 10 programs in the nation.
  • Twenty student-athletes signed to compete at the collegiate level.
  • Students contributed more than 24,000 hours of community service.

Thank you to our students, staff, families, and community members for making this a truly remarkable year. Together, we continue to prove that we are not just SoCo, we're SoCool!

I look forward to being back in touch with you in late-July with any and all updates!

Medicine pick up

This is just a reminder to parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time (10:00am) on the last day of school (6/17/26). Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed.

We advise that those with diabetic or seizure emergency medications wait until your students' last day of school to pick up their medications in case of an emergency as we do not have back-ups available.

Parents are welcome to pick up other medications prior to 6/17/26, especially senior parents.

Students cannot pick up these medications themselves.
