Specialist Spotlight - Advance Academics

Advanced Academics: Encapsulation (Critical and Creative Thinking)

Encapsulation is an important communication skill and processing strategy that helps students synthesize content. It supports convergent thinking as students identify and name big ideas.

As you work on encapsulating ideas, you may want to try instructional approaches such as having students create an elevator speech, generate/sort/synthesize ideas, or write tweets or hashtags related to language arts lessons.

Think of a Headline: Please read this article with your child: https://pz.harvard.edu/resources/headlines

At-Home Connection: Try this activity at home:

  1. Show your child an image from a text (book, magazine, newspaper), a short video clip, or a family photo.
  2. Use the “Headline” strategy from the article linked above.
  3. Take a picture and please share it with me at yfwilliams@fcps.edu .

Student Immunization Events

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has partnered with Inspire Health Alliance, LLC (Inspire) to provide access to school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for FCPS students at multiple events taking place at designated FCPS locations throughout the school year.

  • Immunizations will be provided at no out-of-pocket costs to the student or family. Families will be required to provide insurance information, if applicable, but students without insurance may still receive immunizations with no out-of-pocket costs.
  • Participation in Inspire Immunization Events is voluntary.
  • Additional Immunization Resources are available in the community.

Eligibility

  • All students ages 18 and younger currently enrolled in an FCPS School or Center are eligible to receive immunizations at Inspire immunization events.
  • Students ages 19 and older may access free immunizations at the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) or through other community resources.

You get more information on HERE.

End of Year Celebrations

As we prepare for a variety of end of year celebrations throughout our school building, a friendly reminder that all visitors to the school building must bring a government-issued ID, such as a driver's license or passport, to sign in through the school's front office.  Thank you!

Summer Office Access & Hours

Please note that our front office will have limited access this summer due to seasonal staffing adjustments and we will have ongoing building construction. When visiting, you may notice chain-link fencing around the campus that makes the school appear closed; however, we are open!

Our temporary summer hours for the public will be from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on most workdays. Because our schedule may shift due to holidays or unexpected staffing shortages, we will communicate any specific closure dates dynamically through these weekly community newsletters. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we work to improve our facility!

Summer holidays for FCPS staff include Friday, June 19 in honor of Juneteenth and Friday, July 3 in honor of the Independence Day.

Attendance Matters

Even at the end of the school year, student attendance counts as part of the Bren Mar Park school accreditation.  Children should be in school through the last day of school.  Please continue to notify the office if your child cannot attend school due to illness or a medical appointment.

Please notify the office of any expected extended absences.

BMP Boundary Proposals

Bren Mar Park Boundary Study

Following the Fairfax County School Board’s July 2024 update to Policy 8130, a comprehensive boundary review led to approved changes in January 2026, with further community engagement for specific sites—including those impacting Bren Mar Park Elementary.  Proposals that impact Bren Mar Park are currently being reviewed and feedback is open.  Boundary recommendations are slated for January 2027 in preparation for the following school year.

The current proposal includes:

         - Bren Mar Park Elementary School - PreK - grade 6

         - Key Middle School - grades 7-8

         - Lewis High School - grades 9-12

Feedback is open through June 30, 2026 at https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/maps/boundary-adjustments-information/bren-mar-park-feedback
