Our Kindergarten Bulldogs are officially on their way to 1st grade and some of our PreK Bulldogs are heading to their base school for K! We loved celebrating each student during this special promotion celebration and are so proud of all they have learned and accomplished this year. Way to go, Bulldogs!

Dear Bucknell Families,
I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt thanks for the overwhelming outpouring of love, kind words, and congratulations I received after being named the Fairfax County Public Schools 2026–2027 Outstanding Principal of the Year. I am incredibly humbled and deeply honored by this recognition.
True leadership is never a solo effort. This award isn't just a reflection of my work. It is a testament to our incredible teachers, our dedicated staff, and our wonderful families. This win belongs to all of us. It is a reflection of the beautiful, supportive community we have built together here at Bucknell. Thank you for partnering with me every day to make our school a place where students can thrive.
Field Day Updates & Bucky’s Big Night Out!
We have some very exciting updates regarding our end-of-year celebrations next week:
- Rescheduled Field Day: Because of the weather, we have rescheduled Field Day from today to Tuesday, June 16th. The forecast is calling for a beautiful 80-degree day, which will be absolutely perfect for our outdoor fun!
- Bucky’s Big Night Out! Tuesday evening is also our final community event of the year! Join us for this beloved annual tradition. We will have:
- FREE shaved ice/snow cones for the first 200 students!
- Exciting moon bounces for the kids.
- El Paso food truck on-site selling delicious dinners for the family.
- A wonderful final opportunity for our families to gather, relax, and celebrate the year together. You definitely don’t want to miss it!
Last Day of School & Talent Show Information
The official last day of school is Wednesday, June 17th, and we will be dismissing early at 1:55pm.
Before we head out for summer break, we will host our annual Bucknell Talent Show starting at 9:20am in the gym. Our students have been working hard on their performances, and we would love for you to join us and cheer them on if your schedule allows!
Sprinting to the Finish Line
We are officially at the finish line of the 2025–2026 school year! It is hard to believe how quickly these past ten months have flown by. As we wrap up these final days, please know how incredibly grateful we are that you entrust us with your beautiful children every day. It has been an absolute privilege watching them grow, learn, and succeed.

Último día de clase e información sobre el concurso de talentos
El último día oficial de clase es el miércoles 17 de junio, y saldremos temprano a la 1:55 pm.
Antes de salir de vacaciones de verano, organizaremos nuestro concurso anual de talentos de Bucknell a partir de las 9:20 de la mañana en el gimnasio. Nuestros estudiantes han estado trabajando duro en sus actuaciones, ¡y nos encantaría que te unieras a nosotros y les animaras si tu horario lo permite!

Montessori students are building important early writing skills with metal insets! As they trace shapes and practice controlled pencil movements, they strengthen fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, and attention to detail.

The Metal Insets are a set of ten geometric metal frames and shapes central to early Montessori development. Shapes include the circle, square, triangle, oval, and pentagon.
Though simple, their function is profound. For the initial lesson, the child traces the inner frame and outer inset with a colored pencil. Some of the preceding lessons may include drawing parallel or curvy lines within this shape.
Why They Matter:

Preparation for Writing: The material is critical for developing the pincer grip, controlling pencil pressure, and executing precise movements, strengthening the small muscles necessary for writing.

Visual Discrimination: The exercise refines eye-hand coordination and teaches the child to distinguish subtle differences in shape and spatial relationships.

Concentration: The methodical process cultivates focus, order, and patience.

This past Wednesday, our very own Principal Green was named the recipient of the Principal of the Year Award for all of Fairfax County Public Schools!
This prestigious honor is so well-deserved, and we are beyond proud to celebrate her leadership. Principal Green’s full-circle journey, from being a student in Region 3 to leading Bucknell Elementary, is a true reflection of her dedication to students, families, and the school community. Through her innovative leadership, she has helped bring incredible opportunities to Bucknell, including the Virginia Tech Thinkabit Lab and FCPS’ first Montessori program.
Principal Green leads with a shared vision of equity and excellence, always working to remove barriers and ensure all students have access to meaningful academic, social, and emotional growth. We are so grateful for the way she makes everyone in our Bucknell community feel valued, supported, and affirmed.

As we begin celebrating the Bucknell Class of 2026, we are excited to share the date for our 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony on Monday, June 15! Families are invited to join us as we recognize our students’ hard work, growth, leadership, and accomplishments throughout their elementary school years. We look forward to celebrating this special milestone together as a Bucknell community. More details will be shared in the coming weeks.
Families who need a Bucknell device for students to access summer learning resources are asked to complete the Summer Technology Checkout Form. A paper copy of the form will be sent home in Thursday folders on June 8, but families may also complete the form online.
Please submit the form by Monday, June 15. Devices checked out for the summer must be returned to Bucknell Elementary no later than August 3, 2026. Thank you for helping us make sure students have access to the resources they need over the summer!
Due to weather conditions, Field Day has been moved to Tuesday, June 16. While the forecast currently indicates significantly cooler temperatures, please ensure students are dressed appropriately to be outdoors and bring water. We are excited for them to enjoy this fun-filled day!
