June 12 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

As we wrap up the last full week of school, Rolling Valley was buzzing with activity and celebration!

Throughout the week, our K-6 students participated in presentations from the Fairfax County Public Library and learned about exciting summer reading opportunities. We encourage all of our students to keep reading and learning throughout the summer months.

We were also treated to our school-wide Spring Concert, followed by an evening performance for families. Our students showcased their talents and hard work, and we are grateful to Mrs. Ward for all her work with the students.

Second-grade students were all smiles during their grade-level circus event! Thank you to those families who were able to volunteer, and for the flexibility with moving the event indoors.

We capped off the week with a Fairfax 250 Celebration, commemorating Fairfax County's rich history and bringing our school community together for a fun and meaningful event. Thankfully, we were able to enjoy the festivities outdoors before the afternoon heat arrived!

Thank you to all of our families for your support throughout the school year and for helping make the many activities and events at Rolling Valley such a success. We appreciate your partnership and the countless ways you contribute to our school community.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the final three days of the school year as we celebrate a wonderful year of learning, growth, and achievement together.

Attendance Rate! Families, we are currently at a 7.0% absenteeism rate. Please help us keep this momentum going as we finish the last few weeks of school. Thank you for working together to lower our chronic absenteeism rate.

From the Clinic!

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school.

Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.

If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Library News & Notes!

News from the Library -

We have about 30 student library books still out, we are almost there! If your child still has books checked out, you will be receiving an email or Talking Points from Mrs. Reynolds checking in. Please help your child locate the books this weekend and return them to school on Monday. If you have searched high and low, under beds and behind sofas, and still cannot locate the books, please respond to Mrs. Reynolds at slreynolds2@fcps.edu to talk about next steps. Thank you for your help in ensuring all of our books get returned for next year’s Rockin’ Robins to enjoy!

Unearth a Story with the Fairfax County Public Library's Summer Reading Program

Our public librarians from Pohick Library visited with students this week to share some book talks and about the summer reading challenge! There are separate challenges for kids and adults (everyone can participate!) with prizes for each! Starting on June 17^th, you can pick up a paper log at any Fairfax County public library or sign up with the Beanstack app to log your reading! Complete 10-15 badges for reading and doing activities to earn a coupon booklet upon completion.

There are multiple OPTIONAL summer reading challenges for students to participate in this year. Students have been/will be hearing about them in library class and there are flyers in Friday folders with more information.

• Rolling Valley Summer Reading Challenge-papers will be in progress report folders on the last day of school, read 20 minutes a day for at least 30 days! Extra copies will be available all summer long on the Rolling Valley website and in the front office.

• Barnes and Noble-complete a reading log of 8 books (found online or in stores) and turn in to any Barnes and Noble to choose a free book from a predetermined list!
• Pizza Hut Book It-read, complete their tracker, and earn a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut!
• For Rising 7^th Graders:
• Irving Middle School Summer Reading: Please find here links to a promotional video and the choice board that your rising 7^th-grade students can use to learn about Irving Middle School’s Summer READ Program (it will become available on 6/18).
• Key Middle School: Check out this video for information on how to participate as well as learn about fall author visits and Battle of the Books!

Children's Summer Reading Festival

The Fairfax County Library Foundation is hosting a FREE Summer Reading Festival at the Fairfax County Government Center (12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA) on Saturday, June 13, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Unearth a Story with the Fairfax County Public Library's Summer Reading Program

Youth and adults can sign up for the summer reading program beginning June 10^th online. Readers can track their reading, collect prizes, and attend a number of community events between June 17 and August 19.

Summer Curbside Library Checkout

Want to check out some books this summer? Key MS Library is offering curbside checkout! Fill out this form and pick them up in the main office after you receive an email from Ms. Blair confirming they are ready for you.

Calendar Survey

FCPS values your input as we plan future school calendars. On Friday, June 5, all caregivers and FCPS staff will receive an email from noreply@fcps.edu containing a unique link to complete the FCPS Calendar Survey.

Your feedback matters. Please take a few minutes to share your priorities and perspectives by Monday, June 22, at 11:59 p.m.

Your individual responses will be kept confidential and will not be shared with school staff or used in any way that identifies you or your student. Only aggregate, summary-level results will be reported to the Fairfax County School Board.

If you do not receive a link to the survey or have technical difficulties completing the survey, please contact the FCPS Office of Research and Program Evaluation.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Monday, June 15; 7:00pm- 8:00pm; FCPS Boundary Review Community Meeting at Saratoga ES: FCPS is seeking feedback on SPA 8922 either remaining at RVES or moving to Saratoga ES. The discussion will focus only on the elementary assignment of the SPA given the existing capacity challenges at Irving Middle School and West Springfield High School.

West Springfield High School Basketball Camp

WSHS is hosting its annual summer basketball camp for rising elementary and middle school students! Campers will have the opportunity to develop fundamental basketball skills, participate in drills and games, and learn from West Springfield coaches and players in a fun and supportive environment. Spartan Volleyball Camp Registration has opened! 

Camp Dates - July 6 - 10th, 2026

Camp Location - West Springfield HS

Camp Sessions - separated by age and skill levels

Camp is open to all female athletes, regardless of what school they attend.  We typically have athletes from 10-15 different high schools and feeder schools.  

If you have questions about which session to sign up for, please reach out to me, Coach Stephanie Noriega (sbnoriega@fcps.edu).  I am always happy to help.  

Camp usually sells out in the first couple of weeks, so register now.  

Camp Details:

Spartan Volleyball Camp is designed and has a session for athletes of all skill levels who are eager to enhance their game in a challenging and supportive environment. Camp sessions are structured by age and skill level to ensure every player receives personalized instruction and the best opportunity for growth.

Campers will have the unique opportunity to train with experienced high school coaches from across the country, as well as current college athletes. Campers in Session A and B will also get to work with the high school athletes from the Virginia State Champions team! Sessions will include individual skill development, group instruction, and competitive tournament play, all designed to help players refine their technique, build confidence, and elevate their overall performance.

Session C is ONLY for advanced players.  Unfortunately, we do not have a session for rising 10th-12th graders who are new to volleyball or who only have freshmen team level experience and/or rec volleyball experience.  Athletes attending Session C must have played on their high school Varsity or JV team or are currently playing on a competitive club team. If you are signing up for Session C, the expectation is that you are playing volleyball at or close to the Varsity level.  Most rising 9^th graders should be attending session B.
