| Adapted from an online discussion. Dear Carolyn: I’m a successful female executive and breadwinner for my family. I have a demanding job with frequent travel, speaking at major conferences, etc., yet both family members and friends are dismissive of my job, comparing it to a hobby. One family member compared my job to her volunteering part time at a nonprofit. And lots of questions about why I can’t attend midweek events. It seems disrespectful that they are unable to acknowledge my demanding career — I’m assuming it’s because I’m a woman. Do I just let it go? Or supply a snappy comeback? There are an increasing number of female breadwinners — I just wonder when we get some respect? — Breadwinner |
