I was talking to my neighbor the other day about how our gardens are coming along. She mentioned that her tomatoes are already starting to ripen, which seems early this year. I told her I'd been having trouble with aphids on my rose bushes and she recommended spraying them with a mixture of dish soap and water. I tried it and it actually worked pretty well. Anyway, it got me thinking about how I should probably start composting. I've been meaning to do it for ages but never got around to setting up a bin. She said she uses a simple tumbler and it doesn't smell at all. Maybe I'll look into getting one this weekend. She also gave me some tips about growing basil indoors during the winter. She keeps a small pot on her kitchen windowsill and says it does really well with just indirect light. I think I'll give that a try too. It's been nice having conversations like that again.

I ran into an old friend from college at the grocery store yesterday, which was totally unexpected. We ended up chatting for almost an hour in the parking lot about all sorts of things. She told me she'd recently taken up pottery and is really enjoying it. She showed me some photos of bowls and mugs she'd made and they actually looked really good. I was impressed because I remember her saying in school that she wasn't creative at all. It's funny how people discover new hobbies later in life. She said the class meets twice a week and it's been a great way to unwind after work. She also mentioned that her daughter just started kindergarten and loves it. We exchanged numbers and promised to catch up properly soon. It was really nice to reconnect after so long. Sometimes these chance encounters remind you of the value of maintaining old friendships.
