Peer Support Spotlight:
Building Connection Through Shared Experiences
Peer Specialists from the Iowa City VA Health Care System brought local Veterans together for a bowling outing at Colonial Lanes. While the event was full of laughs, friendly competition, and good conversation, it also reflected something deeper — the heart of what Peer Support is all about.
Peer Support outings are part of the VA’s recovery‑oriented care, led by trained Veterans who draw from their own lived experience to support others. These events create low‑pressure opportunities to connect, build trust, and strengthen emotional well‑being. Many Veterans tell us that spending time with peers who “get it” helps reduce isolation and encourages a renewed sense of community.
Interested in Peer Support? Whether you’re looking to meet other Veterans, explore wellness activities, or learn more about recovery resources, our Peer Specialists are here to walk alongside you. To get connected or find upcoming events, reach out to the Iowa City VA Peer Support team.

Why Water Works
The summer months are here! As you get outside to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air remember to drink, drink, drink! The body needs water to function properly. When the body loses more fluid than it is receiving this is called dehydration. Fluid loss happens through sweating, urination, bowel movements, and breathing.
To combat dehydration, drink more water! The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends men to drink at least 13 cups (104 oz) a day and women 9 cups (72 oz). Other water-based beverages such as tea, milk and coffee contribute to this total fluid recommendation; however, plain water is best and calorie-free so aim for at least half of your daily liquids to be water.

Upgrading Health Care
We have officially opened our newly updated Interventional Radiology and Cardiac Catheterization Lab, a major step forward in the specialized heart care we provide to our Veterans.
With upgraded technology, clearer imaging, and safer, more efficient procedures, this new space strengthens our ability to deliver the high‑quality care Veterans deserve.
A huge thank‑you to the dedicated teams across Nursing, Biomed, IT, Engineering, Logistics, and the Cath Lab who worked tirelessly to bring this project to life. Your teamwork made today possible.
