Virtual Orientation: Resources for Researching our Russian Collections

Are you wondering if the Library of Congress has any Russian materials for your research?

Are you planning a trip to Washington, DC to use the Library’s Russian collections?

Connect with reference librarians from the European Reading Room directly and avoid red tape such as that depicted in the 1858 Объясненіе къ плану теченія бумагъ, a Russian bureaucratic flow chart from the tsarist era! Please join us on July 15 at 2-3 pm Eastern Time for a virtual orientation to the Russian print and digital collections and how to get started. After the session, you'll have the opportunity to connect with Russian collection specialists during a Q&A. The Library of Congress is free and open to everyone age 16 and older.

This will be the first in a series of online orientations to the European collections of the Library of Congress offered by the reference staff of the European Reading Room.

Germany: Legal Amendments Ease Restrictions on Living Kidney Donations

On June 1, 2026, amendments to the German Transplantation Act (Transplantationsgesetz, TPG) entered into force. The reform eases restrictions on kidney transplants and is designed to increase crossover, or paired, living kidney donations. Legal Background The German Transplantation Act governs organ donations. Originally, the law allowed living kidney donations only if donations from deceased donors were unavailable. Also, only a narrow group of people with a special connection to the donor, such as first- or second-degree relatives, spouses, or fiancées, were allowed to donate living kidneys or any other living nonregenerative organs. (TPG, § 8, para. 1, sentence 2.) With these restrictions, lawmakers sought to ensure that donors were truly motivated by altruistic reasons, thereby preventing commercialization and the risk of organ trafficking, practices prohibited under section 17 of the Transplantation Act....

Library Welcomes 2026 Junior Fellows to Summer Internship Program

 

The Library of Congress announced the appointment of 37 undergraduate and graduate students and recent graduates to its 2026 Junior Fellows Program, a 10-week summer internship that gives participants hands-on professional experience working in the world’s largest research library.

The program places fellows across Library divisions on mission-driven projects that improve access to collections, preserve cultural heritage and support digital innovation. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Junior Fellows Program, which since 1991 has connected emerging professionals with meaningful work that advances the Library’s mission.

Projects this year include digital accessibility, preservation of tangible media and digital forensics, web archiving, emerging artists in the archives, and innovative ways to connect users with Library collections.

Celebrating European and Latin American Women Nobel Writers at the Library – Part 2

The Library of Congress Latin American, Caribbean and European Division (LAC&E) and Literary Initiatives presented a display of collection materials related to women from Latin America and Continental Europe who have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The display included original language and translated editions and was presented in conjunction to the reading and conversation that took place at the Library honoring Nobel Laureate poets Gabriela Mistral, Wisława Szymborska, and Nelly Sachs on March 12, 2026.

Journalist John Jenkins discusses this tumultuous period in his new work, Summer of ’71: Five Months that Changed America. Ann Patchett to Receive 2026 Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction

The Library of Congress has announced that the 2026 Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction will be awarded to Ann Patchett at the National Book Festival on Aug. 22.

The annual Prize for American Fiction, one of the Library’s most prestigious awards, honors an American literary writer whose body of work is distinguished by its mastery of the art, as well as its originality of thought and imagination.

“Ann Patchett crafts moving, probing, tender novels. She has a talent for creating fiction that readers continually devour because she thinks deeply and writes evocatively about human connection,” said Acting Librarian of Congress Robert R. Newlen. “I am thrilled that she is the 2026 Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction recipient.”

Senegal: New Law Introduces Amendments on Revoking Electoral Rights

On May 15, 2026, Senegal enacted and published a law in its official gazette clarifying when individuals may be barred from registering to vote. The law amends provisions of the Senegalese Electoral Code, particularly article L.29, which concerns eligibility to register on the voter rolls. Passed by a three-fifths majority in the National Assembly, the law redefines the circumstances under which electoral rights may be revoked and specifies the duration of such revocations.New Provisions of the LawThe new article L.29 excludes convicted felons from the voter rolls. It also excludes those sentenced to more than one month’s imprisonment for certain offenses. These include property offenses (theft, fraud, breach of trust), economic and financial offenses (misappropriation of public funds, corruption, money laundering, illicit enrichment), and offenses relating to integrity...
