That means a lot more people are able to keep working, volunteering and offering guidance to younger generations, whether it's solicited or not. But as people live longer, their health needs tend to become increasingly complicated, requiring a mindset shift for their providers. Unfortunately, not many young doctors have shown interest in pursuing geriatrics, with most states filling no more than half of their training slots. I talked to a leader of the geriatrics fellowship at CU Anschutz about why recruiting is so difficult, and to one aspiring specialist who discovered she loved caring for older people while training in a nursing home early in the pandemic.
