If you think Bernie Sanders is bad at picking Senate candidates, you should see his economic plans, and specifically his promotion of government-run healthcare. On Monday this column noted the latest disturbing news from the socialized medical system within the relatively free economy of the U.K. Now imagine the nightmare of government-run care within a poor, largely unfree economy that does not come close to generating the wealth to support the medical services we enjoy in the U.S. Sadly, one doesn’t need to imagine,
because the tragedy is now manifest. Pakistan routinely scores poorly on global rankings of economic freedom. Government regulation is anything but simple and transparent. Property rights are unreliably protected. Money is unsound. Poverty rates are high and life expectancy is low. This brings us to healthcare. Government officials blamed a 2019 outbreak of HIV among young children on fake doctors with little medical knowledge working independently and reusing needles. Years later, similar outrages have come to light and government officials will have a harder time finding someone to blame. Samaan Lateef reports this week for the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph: Pakistan has launched an investigation after dozens of children were infected with HIV at a government-run hospital, amid allegations that contaminated syringes were reused.
