Over the last two years, community feedback has helped shape Arlington’s Transportation Future, an initiative to create a refreshed transportation plan to address our community’s evolving transportation needs for the next 20 years.
Informed by three rounds of public engagement, the draft Multimodal Transportation Plan is now ready for review. Explore the draft plan, including proposed policies, strategies, transportation network guidance, and curb lane priorities, and share your thoughts online or at an upcoming event.
We want to hear from you!
This is your last opportunity to help shape the plan before it is presented to the County Board. Share your feedback by August 23 and learn more at arlingtonva.us/TransportationFuture.
Last week crews reopened 12th Street South between South Fern Street and South Eads Street to vehicle traffic as part of the Transitway Extension to Pentagon City project.
Here's what's changed:
- The center lanes within the existing roadway were converted into bus-only lanes; this means the County didn't have to widen the road, and crossing distances stayed the same.
- Brand new transit shelters in the center lanes will help bus passengers access uninterrupted lanes to bypass traffic
- Upgraded signals and curbs at the intersections of South Fern Street and South Eads Street, and a brand new signal and refuge medians at the intersection with South Elm Street
Sounds good! So the project is done?
Almost! Reopening 12th Street South is a major milestone, but the project team still has work to do on Crystal Drive north of 15th Street South, and is coordinating with WMATA to complete and open the Transitway for bus service.
Once open, the converted lanes will tie in with the Transitway that runs between Crystal City and Braddock Road Metro in Alexandria today.
Stay tuned through this newsletter and on the project page.

Beginning Monday, July 20, crews will mill and repave Army Navy Drive from South Joyce Street to Memorial Drive, followed by the installation of pavement markings and traffic control devices.
What to Expect During this Work Activity
- Temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted at least two days before the work begins. On-street parking will not be permitted within the work zone for the duration of construction.
- Work is expected to take approximately three weeks to be completed, weather permitting. Construction activities will occur on weekdays between 9:00am and 4:00pm.
- Two-way vehicle access will be maintained throughout the construction; however, motorists should expect lane shifts and temporary alternating one-way traffic during active work operations.
About the Project
This work is in service of the Army Navy Drive Protected Bike Lane project that will add a two-way bike lane on Army Navy Drive between South Joyce Street and Memorial Drive, and will connect with completed improvements on Army Navy Drive east of South Joyce Street.
The bike lane project is expected to be completed in 2027.

Starting approximately on July 10, the Mount Vernon Trail at Gravelly Point will detour for about .25 miles to allow crews to work on the Long Bridge Bridge Project by the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA). Starting approximately July 16, the right hand southbound lane of the George Washington Memorial Parkway will also close to allow crews to work.
Pay attention to directional signs and proceed with care.
