The conflict between the US and Iran has entered a new phase, with tensions escalating after Washington reinstated a naval blockade on Iranian ports following a series of military exchanges. The US Central Command said it completed its latest wave of strikes in response to Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, while Iranian forces claimed retaliatory drone and missile attacks against US military assets in the region. Both sides have pledged to maintain their positions, raising concerns over further escalation.
The developments come as Qatar mourns the death of its former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the leader credited with transforming the country into a global player. Laid to rest in Doha at the age of 74, Sheikh Hamad is also remembered for his support of the Palestinian people, including his landmark 2012 visit to Gaza, where he became the first Arab leader to break Israel’s siege of the territory.
Meanwhile, amid the growing confrontation, US President Donald Trump has issued new threats against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, including the heavily fortified site known as ‘Pickaxe Mountain’. The warnings have intensified questions over the facility’s purpose, defences and strategic importance.
