By learning how to spot the subtle, everyday consequences of unaddressed trauma, you can cultivate mindful awareness, navigate emotional triggers, and nurture a more fulfilling life.

Dear Friends,

So many of us carry hidden emotional burdens without realizing that our everyday struggles — like difficulty focusing, feeling blocked, or pulling away from relationships — might actually be subtle signs of unaddressed trauma. Bestselling author and mental health expert Eric Maisel brings a compassionate, validating perspective to this topic, teaching us that trauma is deeply personal and subjective. In his course, Eric equips us with an actionable mindfulness toolkit, practical self-awareness strategies, and a step-by-step framework to help us rebuild a grounded sense of well-being.

Emily’s Interview With Eric Maisel, Ph.D.

Emily: Eric, thank you so much for joining us. To kick things off, what motivated you to create this course on healing from trauma?

Eric: I really wanted people to understand not only what trauma is and how it affects us, but also how deeply personal it is. Trauma isn't something on a formal checklist, and it isn't defined by the size of an incident. It’s entirely determined by our inner reality and individual makeup.

We’ve been conditioned to think that an event has to be huge to "count" as traumatic, but that’s simply not true. I want people to give themselves full permission to acknowledge their personal experiences as traumatic if that’s how it felt to them. You are the only one who gets to say what has impacted your life. Validating that truth is where real healing begins.

Emily: That validation is so freeing. How does unaddressed trauma typically show up in our day-to-day lives? Are there subtle side effects we might not immediately recognize?

Eric: Absolutely. We often mislabel trauma responses as personal flaws or mental disorders. For instance, if you’re struggling to concentrate, you might assume you just lack focus. But if you look deeper, it might be that growing up in an unsafe environment, combined with current job stress, has created a fractured internal state where focusing feels impossible.

Or consider a writer who feels completely blocked. Rather than just calling it "writer’s block," admitting that having previous manuscripts rejected felt traumatic — and caused real despair — helps pinpoint the actual root. Trauma leaves hints in how we react to stress, when we choose to speak up or fall silent, and how we repeat or avoid patterns. Once we start looking for these subtle intimations, we can begin addressing the underlying cause.

Emily: What can we expect as they move through the healing journey in your course? What specific skills are taught?

Eric: Trauma causes a sort of shattering — it can shatter our sense of safety, our self-esteem, or our basic trust in life. In this course, we focus on practical skills to rebuild after that shattering occurs.

We learn how trauma lives in the body, how to identify specific triggers, and how to spot hidden consequences that might be holding them back. We walk through strategies to access your innate healing freedom and lay out a complete, structured program for long-term recovery. It’s a step-by-step roadmap designed to help you regain your footing and feel whole again.

Emily: You emphasize mindfulness as a foundational tool in this process. Can you share how practicing attentive mindfulness helps us address trauma?

Eric: Mindfulness is really a conscious decision to become aware rather than remain defensively blind. When trauma happens, our natural evolutionary response is often to dissociate — to check out emotionally to protect ourselves. While that serves a purpose in the moment, staying in that defensive state keeps us stuck.

By cultivating attentive mindfulness, you gain the ability to catch yourself before you react automatically. It alerts you when a situation is triggering past painful feelings and gives you the space to respond thoughtfully instead of defensively. That rare stance of gentle awareness is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself on a healing journey.

Emily: Trauma can often make us want to isolate ourselves. Why is social connection and support so essential when working through these past wounds?

Eric: Trauma frequently carries shame, which naturally makes us want to withdraw, hide, or mistrust others. While going through life alone can feel like the safer option, being connected with others is a conscious choice that helps us heal.

Even though trauma harms our ability to relate, love and human warmth are vital for recovery. In the course, we explore how to mindfully override that urge to isolate. Whether it’s reaching out to a friend, joining a peer group, or leaning on a supportive partner, actively cultivating healthy relationships helps lighten the burden and reminds us that we don't have to carry everything by ourselves.

****

Eric, thank you so much for bringing such wisdom, clarity, and grounded compassion to DailyOM today. You’ve given us a reminder that our personal experiences are entirely valid, and that cultivating attentive mindfulness gives us the power to respond to life with awareness rather than defense. If you’re ready to gain actionable tools for long-term emotional recovery, Eric’s course is open for enrollment now.

Until next time, be well.

Ending the Aftershocks of Traumatic Experiences

By Eric Maisel

Trauma can change the way we experience ourselves, our bodies, and the world around us. It may leave us feeling less safe, less trusting, or far from the person we once knew ourselves to be. Yet healing does not begin by forcing ourselves to move on — it begins by understanding what happened with compassion. In this course, therapist and coach Dr. Eric Maisel offers gentle guidance for recognizing how trauma has shaped your life and discovering what support may help you move forward. Through reflective practices, practical tools, and body-aware insights, you’ll learn to better understand your triggers, rebuild self-trust, strengthen resilience, and care for yourself with greater tenderness. Rather than asking you to forget the past, this course creates space for you to live beyond it — with more freedom, wisdom, and hope.
