New Signal Pattern to Maintain Pedestrian Safety

This month, Arlington County implemented a pilot signal modification project at the intersection of westbound Langston Blvd and Fort Myer Drive. This pilot project modifies the intersection’s signal phases to remove potentially conflicting turning movements from the west and south crosswalks.

What does this mean?

In a nutshell, this signal modification will give people in the crosswalk an uninterrupted signal phase by not allowing cars to turn when pedestrians have the right of way.

To achieve this, controls have been placed on the left turn lane from Langston Boulevard onto Fort Myer Drive, and on the right turn lane onto Langston Boulevard to protect the west and south crosswalks. These turns will only be allowed with an an arrow light.

What happens next?

The County will monitor safety impacts and may make changes based upon site conditions. The County will evaluate driver and pedestrian interactions pre- and post-signal modifications, as well as queuing on Fort Myer Drive to Key Bridge.
