By Matt Bernath Most of us who own or run a custom integration business are living in small windows of time. Thirty days. Sixty if we’re lucky. But the owner thinking in 25-year windows still has plenty at stake. They’re building something meant to outlast them, which is its own kind of pressure. But the longer time horizon changes the math on risk. A bad month inside a 25-year plan is a data point worth noting. A bad month, when that’s all you can see, becomes a crisis.

By Henry Clifford One of my mentors blew my mind last week. “We surveyed our customers years ago and asked them a simple question after the job was done,” he said. “Were you asked for a referral?” Turns out only 15% had ever been asked for a referral. Then came the follow-up question: “Would you have provided one if asked?” I’ll save you the suspense: 85% said they’d have happily handed one over if somebody had only bothered to ask.
