Good Afternoon Cavaliers. Sorry if there has been a delay in getting this out. My name is Brian Murphy and I am the new Director of Student Activities at Carter G Woodson High School. I have been the DSA at Mount Vernon High School for the past 4 years. Prior to that I was teaching math and coaching football at Justice High School. Before that I was the Athletic Director, Football Coach, and teacher at West Covina High School in Southern California for 17 years.
Jack Blevins did a great job in the spring here as Interim DSA and has moved on to his alma mater, Hayfield, as ADSA. Warren Williams will continue here as Woodson as ADSA as well, so I am in good hands here.
I have been working on getting all my access to all of the necessary platforms and finally got into this platform. I am all up and ready to go so here we go.
Fall camp for most sports started last Monday. Golf started 2 weeks ago and has already played in 3 tournaments as of today. Cross Country started this Monday and will finish forming their team today or tomorrow. Football started last week and Freshman football started on Monday.
Some highlights for this week: Field Hockey played their scrimmage last night and left for Virginia Beach today after their pictures. They will scrimmage tomorrow against First Colonial in Virginia Beach. Football will have their first Varsity Scrimmage tomorrow at home against Falls Church at 6:00 PM. Volleyball will scrimmage South Lakes tomorrow; Boys are away and Girls are at Home. Cross Country will not have a meet until September 1. Cheer and Dance have been hosting their kids camp this week, which has been a lot of fun for all of those players involved. All teams had their picture day with Victor O'Neiil studios today as well.
Teachers will begin in the building on Monday gearing up for school to start on August 24. Cav Kickoff Open House will be on Friday August 21st from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Freshman and New Student Orientation will be on Thursday August 20th from 4 to 7 PM.
Online registration for athletics is now going through a platform called Final Forms. If you have not done it yet for a sport, you will sign all forms and upload your physical through Final Forms. There have been some IT issues last week getting started but we believe we have gotten everyone going on the system. We are still using the same VHSL physical form as well. You will access your Final Forms login from an email sent to your email that is listed on your parentvue access.
Our website will continue to be woodsonsports.com. Teams have been able to get information posted in their sites recently. We have been having trouble with having our schedules show accurately on the website. They are not linking correctly with the other scheduling program. This has been an issue all FCPS schools are dealing with. The county is working on finding a solution to the problem. We will work on getting a link on the website so that you can open accurate schedules as a workaround to this issue.
For entry in athletic events, ticket prices will remain the same as last year: $7 for adults and $5 for students. Cav passes are available for purchase as well. Here the link to purchase Cav passes for the year:

There are some changes in the county for attending varsity football games this fall. Everyone must enter through the OpenGate waepons detectors. People with passes will pass through the ticket booth aisle after going through detectors. Fans purchasing tickets will walk up the ramp, pass through detectors and then purchase tickets for entry. We will have detectors at the Frost Gate as well. Here is the exact wording from the county:
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is taking additional steps this year to help ensure that our athletic events remain safe for students, families, staff, and community members by introducing security screenings of all spectators at our varsity football games.
We will be using the existing weapons screening systems that our students pass through every morning in our schools. In addition, we will be implementing a standardized bag policy to help support a smooth and efficient entry process. Students, family members, and all spectators are reminded that the following items are prohibited:
- Backpacks
- Purses
- Fanny packs
- Tote bags
- Outside food and beverage
- Sporting equipment (balls, bats, sticks, etc.)
- Any item prohibited by FCPS policy, or determined by event staff to present safety concerns
Approved bags are limited to:
- Clear plastic, vinyl, or pvc bags no larger than 12”6”x12”
- Small clutch bag no larger than 4.5” x 6.5”
- Medical and diaper bags permitted but subject to inspection
As a reminder, middle-school students and younger, must be accompanied by a responsible adult who remains with the student(s) at the event.
